The player in the [[Bowser Suit]] has to pull the rope alone while the three players have to pull the rope together. The team who rotates the slowest will fall into a [[Piranha Plant]]'s mouth.

The gameplay is a variation of {{wp|tug of war}}. The solo player (which is always the human player when playing on [[Mini-Game Island]] in ''Mario Party'') wears a [[Bowser Suit]] and pulls the rope on one side, while the other three pull on the opposite side. The side that rotates slower ends up falling into a [[Big Piranha Plant|giant Piranha Plant]]'s mouth and loses. If none of the characters fall into the Piranha Plant's mouth before time runs out, it is a draw.


In ''Mario Party'', if the three players lose, the player in the Bowser Suit wins five [[coin]]s from each player; if the three players win, they each get five coins from the player in the Bowser Suit.
In the ending, if the solo player wins, they walk up, look in, and laugh, but in ''Mario Party Superstars'', they pump their fist instead. If the team players win, each of them strike their victory poses. In ''Mario Party'', if the solo player wins, they receive five [[Coin]]s from each player, but if they lose, the team players each receive five Coins from the solo player. ''Mario Party'' also has a [[Bowser Space]] variation where the losing players lose Coins, including in the event of a draw. In ''Mario Party Superstars'', there is the usual outcome of the winning side earning 10 coins.


This minigame has a [[Bowser]] variation, sometimes triggered from a [[Bowser Space]]. Here, whoever loses the minigame loses coins. If a draw occurs then everyone loses coins.

*Tug o' War is one of the minigames infamous for [[List of controversies#Mario Party injuries|giving players injuries on their hands]], besides [[Deep Sea Divers]], [[Paddle Battle]], [[Pedal Power]], and [[Cast Aways]]. The ''Mario Party Superstars'' version has a disclaimer on the rules screen that warns players to not turn the stick with their palm to avoid hand injury and stick damage. A similar warning is shown in the [[Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Switch Online]] re-release of ''Mario Party'' and advises the same thing.

The gameplay is a variation of tug of war. The solo player (which is always the human player when playing on Mini-Game Island in Mario Party) wears a Bowser Suit and pulls the rope on one side, while the other three pull on the opposite side.
