Skating, or ice-skating, is a move used primarily by Mario and Luigi in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The move can be done only while the character is walking on ice, and it is activated by shaking either the Wii Remote or the Nunchuk. While skating, the player can control the character as they would normally, though the character moves at a faster speed and does not stop moving unless the character ground-pounds or touches solid ground or an obstacle. The character can also skate backwards if the player presses .
In Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, characters can use the Ice Skate to move around on ice in a similar fashion.
In other titles, such as Mario Sports Mix's Hockey and Smash Skate, skating is the primary source of movement. Skating is also done by the characters in the Mario & Sonic series, used exclusively in the Speed Skating, Figure Skating, and Dream Figure Skating events from Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
