Grim Leechers wait until Yoshi comes near and then hover towards them; if a Grim Leecher makes contact, they knock Baby Mario off Yoshi's back and hop on. This causes the game controls to reverse, signified by Yoshi turning a flashing pink color. Yoshi must Ground Pound to knock a Grim Leecher loose, and can eat them to produce an egg. In Yoshi's New Island, Grim Leechers cannot be eaten, and the Yoshi controlled by a Grim Leecher is now colored purple.

Grim Leecher
Grim Leecher spirit from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
A Grim Leecher's Spirit from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
First appearance Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (1995)
Latest appearance Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (spirit cameo) (2018)

Grim Leechers are enemies from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, its Game Boy Advance remake, and Yoshi's New Island. These enemies resemble purple ghosts with skulls on their faces; their shape in their artwork and model faintly resembles that of a Shy Guy or Toady. Grim Leecher's name is a portmanteau of "Grim Reaper" and "Leech".

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Grim Leechers appear only in The Impossible? Maze, as well as Mystery of the Castle? in the remake. In Yoshi's New Island, Grim Leechers appear in Beware the Boo Brigade.

A Grim Leecher makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a spirit.
