Tug o' War is a 1-vs-3 minigame found in Mario Party, Mario Party: The Top 100, and Mario Party Superstars. It is based on the real-life game tug of war.
This minigame, Paddle Battle, Pedal Power, and, to some extent, Cast Aways and Deep Sea Divers were infamous for causing hand injuries until Nintendo reached a deal to provide padded gloves to players. However, in Mario Party: The Top 100, the Nintendo 3DS's Circle Pad is safer to spin quickly without injuries. In Mario Party Superstars, due to the game utilizing control sticks again, a disclaimer is placed on the rules screen, warning players not to use their palms to turn the stick to avoid hand injury and stick damage. For the Nintendo 64 - Nintendo Switch Online re-release of Mario Party, a warning appears upon the game being started, advising players not to use their palms to rotate the stick.
Gameplay[edit]
The player in the Bowser Suit has to pull the rope alone, while the other three players have to pull the rope together. The side that rotates slower will fall into a giant Piranha Plant's mouth. If no one falls into the Piranha Plant's mouth within the time limit, the minigame ends in a tie.
In Mario Party, if the team players lose, the player in the Bowser Suit wins five coins from each player, or simply 15 coins if one or more players have fewer than five, while the ones with at most five just lose all their coins; if the team players win, they each get five coins from the player in the Bowser Suit. In Superstars, this is changed to the usual outcome of the winning side earning 10 coins.
In Mario Party, this minigame has a Bowser variation triggered from a Bowser Space. Here, whoever loses the minigame loses coins. If a draw occurs, everyone loses coins.
On Mini-Game Island, the player is the solo player in the Bowser Suit and must make the team players fall into the Piranha Plant's mouth.
In Mario Party, the minigame can be purchased from the Mini-Game House for 150 coins when it is available for purchase.
Ending[edit]
Whoever loses is pulled into the Piranha Plant's mouth and is eaten.
In Mario Party, the losing player's/players' coins are then spit out towards the winning player(s), unless it is a Bowser event. If the solo player wins, they walk up, look in, and then laugh. If the team players win, they do a victory dance.
In Mario Party Superstars, if the solo player wins, they pump their fist.
