“I guess our dads are fine. If anything, they're becoming wiser as they're getting older”
Chilliam, Mario & Luigi: Brothership

The Empty Nests is a side quest in Mario & Luigi: Brothership. In this quest, Mario and Luigi must visit Burnadette and Chilliam's dads since the couple's recent wedding.

The Empty Nests becomes available after re-linking Heatfreeze Island and Twistee Island, and expires after the second visit to Fortress Zokket. Clearing the side quest awards the Antiair Boots DX.

Side quest

Mario and Luigi must travel to Heatfreeze Island and speak with Burnadette and Chilliam at the center of the town plaza. The newlywed couple is thrilled but worried about their fathers, who are alone on two different islands. Burnadette first asks the brothers to check on her dad on Skorcheen Island.

Upon arriving at Skorcheen Island, Mario and Luigi head west across the bridge to speak with Burnadette's dad. He shares a flashback about his daughter's "rebellious phase" when she was annoyed by his flatulence caused by his favorite food, Heatfreeze Potatoes. In the present, Burnadette's dad comments on how much Burnadette has grown since then and asks Mario and Luigi to encourage her to visit him sometimes. He also requests that they check in on Chilliam's dad on Slippenglide Island, as he seemed upset at the wedding.

Once on Slippenglide Island, Mario and Luigi head northeast to speak with Chilliam's dad. Chilliam's dad explains that he struggled to develop a good pun. In a flashback, it is revealed that he taught Chilliam the importance of punning as a ruler and had him practice; however, he realized that he wasn't very good at punning himself. In the present, he asks the brothers to tell Chilliam to focus on his new life and making his wife happy.

After speaking with both dads, Mario and Luigi return to Heatfreeze Island to inform Burnadette and Chilliam that their fathers are fine, easing their concerns. Chilliam praises them for their wisdom as they age, and Burnadette thanks the brothers, knowing that she and Chilliam will live a happy life together. Chilliam rewards the brothers with a wedding party gift before they part ways.

Gossips' dialogue

The following quotes are from the Gossips if they are spoken to while the side quest is available.

  • Yellow gossip: "Juicy news, girls! There's been a boom in secret relationships on Heatfreeze Island!"
  • Pink gossip: "Well, fantasy weddings do tend to inspire romance... Not that we were invited or anything."
  • Blue gossip: "Oh, dream weddings make me want to do it all over again."
  • Yellow gossip: "I know! We went down that road about a thousand years ago!"
  • Pink gossip: "Ohohoho!"
  • Yellow gossip: "But isn't it just dreadful? You fall in love, and things are going along well..."
  • Pink gossip: "And you lose the ring you got for your beloved. I can't believe that happened to someone."
  • Blue gossip: "No! How could you let yourself lose something so precious?"
  • Pink gossip: "Rings are so small. They come loose. They drop. They roll away. They get lost. Or stuck!"
  • Yellow gossip: "Girls, let's all be extra careful not to lose our wedding rings!"
  • Blue gossip: "They're never coming off again!"
  • All three: "Oh, goodness! Ohohohoho!"
