- —Luma, Super Mario Galaxy
Star Chips are items that appear in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They always appear in sets of five, representing the five points of a star. When Mario (or Luigi) collects all five of the yellow pieces, a Launch Star appears. In addition to the regular yellow ones, there are blue Star Chips, which are far less common. When all five of this kind are collected, they create Pull Stars. Sometimes, upon Mario completing a set of yellow Star Chips, several Pull Stars appear in addition to the Launch Star. When the first Star Chip is collected, a small icon representing the Launch Star (or Pull Star) appears at the top middle of the screen, and it gradually fills up in a clockwise direction as Mario collects more Star Chips. If any Star Chips are collected underwater, they completely refill Mario's air meter.
Star Chips are also found in Mario Tennis Open. They appear exclusively in Galaxy Rally, a Special Minigame. If the player hits one with the ball, the player collects some coins while filling a Launch Star meter. When the Launch Star meter is full, the Star Chips stop appearing, and a Launch Star is formed. After a certain amount of time, the Launch Star disappears and the Star Chips reappear.
