Underwater rings are objects in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Underwater rings are orange and yellow, with red outer rims. In the Prima Games guidebook for Super Mario Galaxy 2, they are referred to as "zipper gates."[1] When Mario or Luigi approaches an underwater ring, a small whirlpool can be seen inside it. Swimming through one grants the character a brief speed boost. Underwater rings occur in the Sea Slide Galaxy, Deep Dark Galaxy, and Slimy Spring Galaxy, typically near a Koopa Shell. Passing through a ring while clinging to a shell makes Mario or Luigi spin as he boosts.

Sets of similar-looking rings appear in missions where the player must chase Guppy in the Sea Slide Galaxy and Deep Dark Galaxy. These do not provide a speed boost, but they instead serve as the main objective during Guppy's missions.
