Trace Race is a Battle minigame in Mario Party 4 and a Free-for-All minigame in Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars. Despite being called a race, this minigame is not about finishing first.
Introduction
The camera zooms in on the beginning of a giant clipboard as the four players jump in, one by one, each holding a giant crayon.
Gameplay
Players each have a giant crayon and a long path that they must trace. The path winds with a series of turns, curves, and loops. Players score points based on their accuracy. The most accurate player at the path's end wins, unless no one scores at least 30 points, in which case the game ends in a draw.
In Mario Party 4, each crayon and path is colored according to the character, with a relevant symbol at the beginning of the path. In Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars, the standard player colors are used, with the symbol always being a mushroom.
Ending
After all four players reach the end of the track, the screen shows their traces from beginning to end, calculating who was most accurate. In Mario Party 4 and Mario Party Superstars, winning players do their victory animations while the other players do their losing animations, and if everyone achieves the same score, they all do their losing animations.
