Big Spinies are larger variants of Spinies that first appear in Mario Party 9.
History
Big Spinies appear in a single minigame, Sock it to Lakitu, once Lakitu's health is reduced by half. Lakitu will start throwing Big Spinies, which act the same way as normal Spinies in the boss fight, except that players hit by them will lose two points.
They reappear in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, as well as Super Mario Maker 2; the player can enlarge a normal Spiny by using a Super Mushroom. Winged Big Spinies will act the same as their smaller counterparts.
A single Big Spiny appears in Paper Mario: Color Splash as a mini boss in Kiwano Temple, where it guards a Mini Paint Star. In battle, it can charge up its attacks and fly at Mario to do damage. Swoops can assist the Big Spiny in battle if it is not flipped over.
Big Spinies are also found in Super Mario Run, first appearing in World 3-1: Big Spiny Blitz. They behave like regular Spinies from 2D Mario platformers.
