The Popgun is a type of weapon commonly used in the Donkey Kong series. Originally appearing in Donkey Kong 64, they are small, ranged weapons that shoot various types of projectiles, such as Peanuts or bubble gum.

Peanut Popgun

The Peanut Popguns are an item in Donkey Kong 64. Diddy Kong can buy them from Funky Kong. Their appearance is that of two small pistols made of wood, appearing to be hollowed out logs. They are used, among other things, to shoot enemies, Peanut Switches, and Banana Balloons. In the level Fungi Forest, homing ammo can be acquired for the popguns. He also can use these guns while using his jetpack.

The Peanut Popgun appears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as an attack for Diddy Kong. It is Diddy Kong's standard special move, and can be charged up. When charged up, the peanuts fired are much faster, and will have a better chance at hitting the opponents. However, charging it up too long is dangerous, as it might explode on Diddy Kong. The attack occasionally releases Peanuts, which can be eaten for a slight health increase. Diddy Kong also uses two Peanut Popguns when using his Final Smash, the Rocketbarrel Barrage. If Diddy Kong's powers are copied by Kirby, he will also be able to use Peanut Popgun. The Peanut Popgun will return in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, where the overcharge explosion becomes a powerful but hard to hit attack.

The Peanut Popgun reappears in Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It allows Diddy Kong to shoot peanuts at enemies, as usual. Enemies shot by the Popgun will become stunned, similar to Donkey Kong's Hand Slap move.

In Donkey Kong 64, he carried two pistols and could fire two shots at a time. In Smash Bros., the peanut ammo bursts out of its shells when fired. The peanuts can be grabbed and eaten to reduce damage. The longer the gun is charged before firing, the faster the peanuts fly.

Bubble Gum Popgun

The Bubble Gum Popgun is used by Dixie Kong in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It works similarily to the Peanut Popgun, although instead of peanuts, it shoots bubble gum. It is a reference to Dixie's idle animation in Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble, where she would blow bubble gum.

Denture Popgun

The Denture Popgun is used by Cranky Kong in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It works similarily to the Peanut Popgun, although instead of peanuts, it shoots dentures.

  • In beta screenshots of Donkey Kong 64, the Peanut Popguns originally looked like real guns. This was most likely changed to give the game a more child-friendly rating.
