History[edit]
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
In Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, the Poochy Pups are introduced to the player at the end of the opening cutscene, where Poochy calls them out from the Poochy Hut to play with everyone.
If the player is using Mellow Mode, then they can have the Poochy Pups join Winged Yoshi in each stage. The trio replace Yoshi's yarn balls, following him and being able to be thrown just like the item. This is to the point where Yoshi cannot have yarn balls follow him while the Poochy Pups are active: loose ones fall off the screen when collected and swallowing enemies has the yarn ball dissipate on the spot. Yarn Baskets do not create yarn balls either. Unlike yarn balls, Poochy Pups do not cease existing on contact with objects they interact with. This does not prevent Poochy Pups from filling in frame objects and enemies like a yarn ball. Also, gravity begins to act on a Poochy Pup once it bounces off any surface, rather than not affecting the Poochy Pup at all. Poochy Pups bounce somewhat erratically, but bounce back to Yoshi after the fourth impact. They also rebound back to Yoshi if they hit a Winged Cloud, spikes, or go too far from the screen. These conditions cause yarn balls to cease existing. Poochy Pups can collect hearts, Wonder Wool and the Invincibility Egg, unlike yarn balls, though they bounce off of Wonder Wool as though they hit a Winged Cloud. Poochy Pups do not become loose and non-damaging if Yoshi uses his tongue on them. If all three Poochy Pups are out of Yoshi's reach for any reason, Yoshi throws red yarn balls instead. Yoshi can throw up to three red yarn balls in this way before a short cooldown begins, perhaps imitating how Yoshi can normally hold six yarn balls. Even if this cooldown is over, there can only be three red yarn balls in play at the same time. While Yoshi is in the air or standing on certain fiddly places like Ice Blocks and some moving platforms, Poochy Pups have a flying animation where they twirl their tail. Poochy Pups bounce to Yoshi as he goes through any transition in the game, or prepares to go through it in the case of doors. Poochy Pups have a unique animation when entering doors compared to yarn balls, where they bunch up in a triangle formation.
The Poochy Pups additionally help the player throughout the whole game. Sometimes, one will drop directly down to the ground, then rush ahead to tackle an enemy. Poochy Pups moving in this way are essentially rolling yarn balls, as they are able to collect beads. This tackle affects the enemy exactly like it was hit with a thrown Poochy Pup/yarn ball. They are more likely to do this for enemies that can be tied up, like Piranha Plants, Stilt Guys, and Bill Blasters, but this excludes Snag-Stitches. They do not attack enemies that are frames, such as Frame Chomp and Frame Boo. If a Poochy Pup collides with any enemy while attacking, even if this is not the enemy they intended to attack, then that enemy gets hit. This action of the Poochy Pups has no effect on Tap-Taps, but the Poochy Pups will try to attack fruitlessly. This attack is usually completed with a final jump, after which the Poochy Pup bounces back to Winged Yoshi. If this jump collides with a wall, then the Poochy Pup stops. If this jump lands on the ground, the Poochy Pup trips and is stuck for a short time. This attack does not happen against Tap-Taps, leaving the Poochy Pups to chase those enemies around. Much like with yarn balls, Poochy Pups return after connecting with any enemy, missing their target, or falling off screen in pursuit of their target. Note that Poochy Pups can act even if Yoshi is trapped by an enemy, potentially freeing Yoshi in the process.
A Poochy Pup can jump ahead to objects with bows, Present Boxes, invisible Winged Clouds, hidden passages, invisible wireframes, enterable Warp Pipes, places leading to any of the prior objects plus Smiley Flowers and Wonder Wool, places where any of prior objects plus Smiley Flowers and Wonder Wool can appear, and Spring Balls. In the case of all but the last of these, the Poochy Pup will bark to indicate that it found something. This also reveals the Winged Cloud's location, if applicable. In the case of Spring Balls, the Poochy Pup bounces on the Spring Ball to indicate Winged Yoshi can do the same. The Poochy Pups can do this even if there are solid objects like Ice Blocks in the way, and can even jump to locations that are offscreen. The place they are landing in can be in the air, the Poochy Pup does not fall down while doing so. For all of the aforementioned actions, only one Poochy Pup will act on the same enemy/object/place; they do not double up. If a Poochy Pup seeking one of these objects or places collides with an enemy, that enemy takes damage as per the prior paragraph and the Poochy Pup bounces back to Yoshi. After the player finds the secret, uses the item, or walks away, the Poochy Pup will bounce back to Yoshi. After going through the Goal Ring or defeating a boss the Poochy Pups celebrate alongside Yoshi. They have a different animation for Castles compared to Forts.
A button on the Touch Screen is a pocket for the Poochy Pups. By touching it, the Poochy Pups jump away into the foreground, while they are represented by the light blue one on jumping into the pocket. In this state, Winged Yoshi can collect and throw yarn balls as normal, but cannot use the infinite supply of red yarn balls. If the button is used again, the light blue Poochy Pup hops out while all three return to the Top Screen. If Yoshi has any yarn balls at this point, the yarn balls will vanish. This toggle can be used while the game is paused, which additionally also unpauses the game. It cannot be used in certain cases, such as while transformed. Since the Poochy Pups are yarn ball replacements, they do not appear during cutscenes aside from the opening cutscene but will hop back onscreen once a cutscene ends. If the Poochy Pups are out when Yoshi enters a Transformation Door, each of them sits on one of the clocks in the stage that Yoshi collects.
In the Poochy Dash mode, the Poochy Pups appear in each stage as collectables. Once found, each one joins Poochy in running to the goal. Once past the goal, different animations play based on the number of Poochy Pups found. Collecting a Poochy Pup gives the player a bonus of 50 beads at the end of the stage, in the form of a firework pattern appearing.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]
The three Poochy Pups return in Yoshi's Crafted World, where they are hidden throughout the flip side of each level. Yoshi is required to find all three and bring them to the goal. A Poochy Pup can be heard barking if it is nearby; once a Poochy Pup is collected, it follows Yoshi and can be thrown like a Yoshi Egg and reused as in Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. Poochy Pups are also hidden throughout the game's official website, each of which rewards the player with 50 Platinum Points for My Nintendo when found.
Their behavior may be a reference to the behavior of the smaller Poochy from Yoshi's Story.
