Mario Kart World is an upcoming game in the Mario Kart series set to be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch title worldwide on June 5, 2025. First teased during the system's "first-look" trailer on January 16, 2025, the game was properly revealed in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation on April 2, 2025. It is the sixteenth entry in the Mario Kart series, the twelfth to be released by Nintendo, the first game announced for the Switch 2, and the first new Mario Kart title since Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, released almost five years prior. It is also the first Super Mario game overall to be released for the Switch 2, the first Mario Kart game to feature Kevin Afghani's voicework and the first Mario Kart game to be a launch title for its console.
Races now consist of 24 racers, doubling from the previous 12. Players receive points in racing as before, with some positions receiving the same number of points.[10] Bikes and All-Terrain Vehicles return following their absence in Mario Kart Tour. Some karts in this game utilize unique wheel designs, with some lacking wheels entirely in favor of treads. Kart customization as seen in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 does not return, and gliders introduced in Mario Kart 7 are also absent. Instead, karts can now extend wings, which function the same as gliders. Karts can also now drive along the top of water rather than beneath it, with both new mechanics creating a comparable vehicle system to Diddy Kong Racing. Karts have also gained the ability to drive on walls after a height boost, without anti-gravity, and balance on railings and other thin platforms to quickly charge up Mini-Turbos. In addition, two new in-game modes were added: Knockout Tour and Free Roam. Knockout Tour is an all-out battle mode where players race over consecutive tracks and are eliminated on a specific lap if not met after the required amount of racers, while Free Roam is an open-world adventure mode where one or multiple players can freely explore any track both on- and off-road.[1] Classic courses return, including some of the Super Mario Kart courses connected together.
The art style of the game's characters appears to have changed significantly to resemble 2D illustrations drawn by Shigehisa Nakaue, much like the in-game art style of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Additionally, characters now have a wide variety of alternate costumes and clothing worn by characters is substantially more detailed than in previous games. The game's roster marked the playable debut of many enemies from across the series, including Cataquack, Coin Coffer, Swoop, and Conkdor, among many more. Altogether, this game features the most brand new playable character additions to the Mario Kart series to date.
The game was covered during the Nintendo Treehouse: Live events on April 3 and 4, 2025.[10][11][dead link] A dedicated Nintendo Direct for the game titled the "Mario Kart World Direct" is set to be broadcast on April 17, 2025 at 6:00 a.m. PST / 9:00 a.m. EST / 2:00 p.m. BST.[1]

Courses
So far, Mario Kart World is known to have 30 courses, 31 if the two routes for Crown City are counted separately. Sixteen of those courses are new, while the other fourteen return from previous entries, including one course from Mario Kart Tour, two courses each from Super Mario Kart (both of which combine multiple iterations of the track into one), Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Kart Wii, and Mario Kart 7, and three courses from Mario Kart DS, while no courses from Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Mario Kart 8 are shown to return so far. New to the series are intermissions,[23] which are long, open trails filled with various hazards that connect courses to each other across a large, open world, which is explorable in Free Roam mode.[1]
Classic courses in this game (marked with their origin game's prefix below) have been significantly revamped, bearing even less resemblance to the original courses than as they appeared in previous games. Unlike previous games since Mario Kart DS, the game's cups are no longer separated between new and classic courses, with the game's known seven cups instead housing a varying amount of both types of courses.[1] This is the first Mario Kart game since Mario Kart: Super Circuit to not have prefixes appended to the names of any of the classic courses.
Grand Prix
The format of the Grand Prix has been changed significantly from previous games. Now, only the first race of a cup follows the traditional three lap format. The last three races follow a sectioned format instead, with the first two sections of the race taking place across intermissions that transition from the previous course to the next, while the final section consists of one lap of that next course.[10]
Three lap races are not entirely absent from the game, however, but it is unknown how they are implemented.[24] One mode allows players to configure intermissions in the rules.[23]
The backgrounds of the cup icons are reflective of the biome the cup's courses are located in. For example, the Star Cup's icon has an icy background, as its courses are near or within the snowy biome.

Choco Mountain (N64) and Toad's Factory (Wii) have been shown to be part of the Lightning Cup, being connected in that order.[16] However it is unknown which exact position they have in the cup, and Moo Moo Meadows (Wii) also displays advertisements for the Lightning Cup. Signage for the autumnal themed course shows a Leaf Cup emblem.
The following courses are also confirmed, but it is unknown which cup they will be featured in.
- Salty Salty Speedway - A course set in a town resembling Venice where racers mainly drive through canals. The icon for the course features a statue depicting Birdo as a mermaid. Signage around the course reads "Lagoon City".[25]

- Dino Dino Jungle (GCN) - Redesigned to revolve around a laboratory named "Dino Dino Laboratory", with more dinosaurs directly on the course. Dinosaurs returning from the original also feature new designs.[1][34]
Other courses
While not confirmed to be playable as traditional race courses, several other tracks can be seen in the open world as part of intermissions, including Ghost Valley 1, Ghost Valley 2, and Ghost Valley 3 near Boo Cinema, Choco Island 2 near Choco Mountain, a fork in an icy section that may be Vanilla Lake 1 near an entrance to Sky-High Sundae,[1] and a quicksand pit that appears similar to Thwomp Desert in the desert near Airship Fortress.[13]
Knockout Tour
Knockout Tour consists of rallies rather than cups, with each of the eight rallies having 6 races within. Unlike races, there are no breaks in between, as players who qualify for the next race will simply continue it. Unlike the Grand Prix, Knockout Tour focuses primarily on the intermissions between the courses, with the first five races taking place on a continuous path of them, while only the final race consist of a lap around the final course.[35]
Vehicles
Karts, Bikes and ATVs all return in Mario Kart World. All racers use different vehicles in the trailer, with each vehicle having unique wheel and tire designs.[37] Vehicles are no longer customizable, like they were up to Mario Kart Wii. Instead of Gliders, vehicles now feature wings that allow them to glide in a similar manner. When going over water, the wheels of all vehicles change into water skis, allowing them to float.[10]
