Narrator, Super Mario Maker 2 – World Maker Update – Nintendo Switch

The Frog Suit is a power-up that debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3. The Frog Suit transforms Mario or Luigi into Frog Mario or Frog Luigi. It grants Mario or Luigi the power to jump higher, swim faster, and resist water currents better, but they can only hop while on land. When Frog Mario or Frog Luigi is hit by an enemy, they revert back to Super Mario or Super Luigi.

The Penguin Suit of New Super Mario Bros. Wii has somewhat similar swimming abilities to those of the Frog Suit.

History

Super Mario series

Super Mario Bros. 3

Island World
Mario swimming through Water Land with a Frog Suit

The Frog Suit first appears in Super Mario Bros. 3. It can be found inside Giant ? Blocks in certain bonus rooms, and can be obtained from Toad Houses from World 3 and beyond; a Toad House in a secret part of World 2 also has one. The suit, as stated above, lets Mario swim faster and better, jump higher, swim through water currents, and hop while on land.

The Frog Suit is a handy item to use in underwater levels. Without one, Mario and Luigi will sink underwater and can only swim up and/or left/right. Frog Suits allow them to remain stationary in the water, and swim in any direction. However, Frog Suits do not provide much help on dry land. When out of water, Frog Mario and Frog Luigi move very slowly, as they can only move by hopping (instead of running). On the positive side, Frog Suits do allow the Mario Brothers to jump higher than they can normally, and it is possible to run on dry land in Frog form if the player is carrying an object, like a Koopa Shell.

If Mario or Luigi defeats a Koopaling while in Frog form, the restored king will say, "Oh me, oh my! You've been transformed! Shall I change you back with this wand?"

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS

Although the power-up itself does not appear, Super Mario Maker features a Mystery Mushroom costume based on the Frog Suit for the Super Mario Bros. theme. In addition, in Super Mario Maker and at the start of Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, knocking on a Warp Door in the Super Mario Bros. 3 theme in Edit Mode may cause Weird Mario to appear in a Frog Suit.

Super Mario Maker 2

The Frog Suit was added to Super Mario Maker 2 in the version 3.0.0 update released on April 22, 2020, appearing as an item in the Super Mario Bros. 3 style. It allows the player to move more efficiently underwater, along with being able to run on the surface of water when holding an item along if the P-Meter is maxed-out. In the nighttime ground theme, Frog Suits jump back and forth, rather than jumping in a single direction. Since the nighttime castle theme makes players swim in the air, the Frog Suit accordingly grants the same mobility here as it does underwater.

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

The Frog Suit also appears often in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3.

In "Reptiles in the Rose Garden," Mario uses a Frog Suit to get the White House back on the surface of the Mushroom Sea after Bowser sank it.

In "Oh, Brother!", Luigi used a Frog Suit to swim through a flooded Pipe Maze in order to rescue Mario from Bowser and Kooky.

In "Mush-Rumors", Mario and Luigi donned Frog Suits in an attempt to save Norman's family from the Koopas, but were unsuccessful in the end.

The most prominent appearance of the Frog Suit in the cartoon was in the episode "The Ugly Mermaid," because Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad were all using Frog Suits (and thus creating Frog Princess and Frog Toad), and they kept those suits through the whole episode.

In the beginning of "7 Continents for 7 Koopas," Mario and Luigi can be seen crossing a bridge wearing Frog Suits. They were planning to relax in the water with Princess Toadstool and Toad, when King Koopa attacked, thus starting the problems for the Mario Bros.

In "The Venice Menace" Mario suggested for Luigi and himself to take their Frog Suits with them on their trip to Venice. This piece of advice helped them greatly throughout the course of the episode.

In "Super Koopa", Bowser had access to a Power Pendant that gave him the same powers that Mario and Luigi normally used, including a Frog Suit. Mario and Luigi later wore Frog Suits, which they used to leap away from Super Koopa's attacks.

Additionally, Luigi is seen wearing a Frog Suit during the show's introductory sequence, in which he rescues Toad from Bully and Big Mouth Koopa after they capture him while underwater. Artwork of Frog Luigi also appears on the cover of Shout! Factory's Complete Series DVD set.

One distinct feature of the Frog Suits in the show is that the eyes on the suit mimic those of its wearer.

Nintendo Comics System

In the Nintendo Comics System story "Love Flounders," Mario wears a Frog Suit to help him swim underwater on his quest to retrieve Chuckberries, but loses it after being kissed by Bertha.

Nintendo Adventure Books

Early on in the Nintendo Adventure Book Leaping Lizards, Luigi can acquire a Frog Suit, which he needs if he encounters a swarm of Bloopers in a body of water in Iggy Koopa's secret lab; the Frog Suit allows Luigi to deflect some Sleepy Ink they spray at him. In a later book, Unjust Desserts, Mario mentions he should have brought a Frog Suit while tumbling through some of the fluid in Yoshi's body.

Super Mario-kun

At the beginning of the Super Mario-kun adaptation of Super Mario World, Mario pulls a prank on Luigi, pretending to drown when he actually has a Frog Suit on.

Paper Mario series

Paper Mario: Sticker Star

After an approximate 20-year absence, the Frog Suit returns in Paper Mario: Sticker Star as a sticker that Mario can wear. For one turn, Mario becomes able to avoid enemies' attacks by jumping over them; his next attacks also become stronger. It was originally designed to act like the Multibounce Badge, but was ultimately replaced in that role by the Line Jump sticker. It can be found in Sandshifter Ruins and purchased at Outlook Point, and it is placed as #62 in the Sticker Museum.

Paper Mario: Color Splash

The Frog Suit returns as a card in Paper Mario: Color Splash, acting as it did in the previous game. However, Mario now becomes Frog Mario, his attack power remains the same, and he loses the form upon taking damage (this physically removes the Frog Suit, as in Super Mario Bros. 3) or winning, rather than when his turn is over.

Other appearances

In the Super Mario Mash-up of Minecraft, Iron Armor is replaced by the Frog Suit.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The Frog Suit appears in concept artwork for a scrapped scene in The Super Mario Bros. Movie set in a room with various power-ups.[1]
