- “Oh, Mario, you restored my color! Thanks so much! I've gotta run. Places to be! Good luck out there!”
- —Redd, Paper Mario: Color Splash
Redd is a character in Paper Mario: Color Splash, and is one of Piper's five friends, the second one to be found chronologically. He seems to have a simple personality when Mario meets him - however, he is shown to have serious connection to the group. According to his story, he met Piper while preparing for a field event, after which they formed their friendship. Later on, he, along with Bloo, Greenie, and Purp, travel to Marmalade Valley to recover the Rainbow Carnation. Once they have healed Piper's tree and reunited with Piper himself, the six friends head to the Crimson Tower, where they are seen for the remainder of the game.
History
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Mario may locate a colorless Toad lying along the cliff edge in Ruddy Road, near the Fire Extinguisher. This Toad turns out to be Redd. He simply thanks Mario for restoring his color before running off, wishing Mario luck ahead.
After this, Mario may return to the meeting area in the yellow district of Port Prisma. He is just in time to see Redd join Purp, whom he addresses as "Big Purp". They both agree it has been a while since they have seen each other. Redd even claims he was considering changing his name to "Whyte" prior to having his colors restored. He inquires about the letter from Piper, claiming they would meet again when the tree fully bloomed. Purp excitedly shows Redd the sprout.
As Redd thinks about meeting Piper again, he recalls a story involving a field day event. Supposedly, as he was getting into shape, he encountered Piper, believing he was making fun of him, encouraging him to work harder. As it turns out, he stayed in last place throughout the entire event, with Piper focusing the lead. Toward the end, Piper suddenly fell down and tripped everyone but him. Afterward, Redd asked Piper if he had done so intentionally. Although he does not give a serious answer, Redd still assumes it was on purpose, marking the start of their friendship. As with the others, Huey is noticeably pleased with this story.
If Mario returns to the meeting area after Yella has been found, a Toad looking after the tree explains the others set off to find the Rainbow Carnation in Marmalade Valley as medicine for the dry and withered tree. If Mario heads to Marmalade Valley following this, Redd along with the others can be seen scaling the mountain to retrieve the flower, after which they jump off and head back to their meeting area.
Here, not only is the tree better than ever, Yella shows up, making him the last member to be found. However, he informs them Piper has dried up and disappeared. Redd, along with the others, is noticeably shocked. He insists Mario can restore his color, though Yella tells him there is nothing that can be done. Just then, a nut falls out of the tree and cracks open to reveal a Ptooie Mario is prepared to battle. However, before he can do so, the Toads form a line in front of it, informing Mario it is actually Piper. Redd states he is excited to be reunited and to make new memories together. Piper responds by whistling, which they insist is a laugh. Redd follows the others out of the area, becomes nervous when Piper trips, and relieved when he gets back up. This performance is cheered on by a group of Toads below.
From here on, Redd, Piper and the others can be found in front of the Crimson Tower. Piper is shown blowing them into the air one at a time, to everyone's pleasure.
