A Heart Boost is a power-up item that appears in Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It adds a third heart to Donkey Kong's health for a level, or a partner Kong in two-player mode. The Heart Boost functions the same in both games and it can be bought for ten Banana Coins from Cranky Kong's Shop and Funky's Fly 'n' Buy from the respective games. Like other inventory items, it cannot be used in Mirror Mode.

In Donkey Kong Country Returns 3Ds New Mode, Heart Boosts had their price reduced to three Banana Coins at Cranky Kong's Shop. The Crash Guard has a similar role to the Heart Boost, except it increases the durability of Mine Carts or Rocket Barrels in a level.

A Heart Boost is a power-up item that appears in Donkey Kong Country Returns, its Nintendo 3DS port, its Nintendo Switch port, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. When equipped, it serves as additional heart for the player's health. The heart has a white plus in the middle. When player takes damage, they lose the heart of a Heart Boost before their normal hearts. If a character loses the heart of a Heart Boost, they can regain the heart through any means that recovers a regular heart. This is unlike the Banana Juice item, whose ability to block damage cannot be replenished. As with all inventory items, the Heart Boost's effect wears off if the player leaves the level. Losing a life does not cause the player to lose a Heart Boost, also unlike the Banana Juice. Heart Boosts can be bought for ten Banana Coins from Cranky Kong's Shop in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Funky's Fly 'n' Buy in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. In Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D's New Mode and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD's Modern Mode, Heart Boosts cost three Banana Coins.
