A typical instance in the "side-scrolling" games nodding to Super Mario Bros., Chapter 1-1 (which takes place in Lineland Road) opens with a recreation of part of World 1-1 of Super Mario Bros. (similar to New Super Mario Bros.) and has remixed music from Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario World. For some peculiar reason, the Lineland Road has a population of Goombas, despite being a different dimension (although. since Goombas are found almost everywhere this isn't really a contreversial matter); however, after being briefed by Tippi on how to use the Tattle function, Mario quickly dispatched them, along with some Squiglets, and found Bestovius' house.

Bestovius, full of his mustache, was reluctant to allow Mario, whose mustache was "clearly unworthy" (in his eyes, anyway), to learn the was of flipping to 3-D. He went as far as to ask for 10,000 coins from Mario, stating that heroes shouldn't be cheapskates.  Mario agreed, though he did not have enough (this would be impossible anyway as the maximum amount of coins Mario could carry is 999). Bestovius gave up and simply asked for all of Mario's coins(unless the player refused, otherwise Bestovius taught Mario for free).  After the deed was done, Mario learned how to flip to 3-D.
In the final level, Mario moves through mysterious ruins, discovering many secrets left by the Ancients. After surfacing, Mario meets Fracktail, a robotic guardian that protects the Pure Heart. Dimentio strikes Fracktail's antenna, resulting in a malfunction that causes Fracktail to attack Mario. He serves as Lineland's Chapter Boss. After destroying Fracktail, Mario meets Merlumina, the ghost of an Ancient, who tells Mario a bit of the Light Prophecy before surrendering the second Pure Heart.

Most of the remainder of Chapter 1-1 simply revolved around getting the player used to switching from 2-D to 3-D on a regular basis. In the end, Mario reached the end of the road and began his hike up Mount Lineland.

Lineland is the setting of Chapter 1 in Super Paper Mario. Its skies are full of strange, surreal mathematical formulas, such as (translated into literary form) "Fire Flower is greater than or equal to some kind of Block divided by Warp Pipe."

Lineland's Chapter 1-1 pays a homage to the original Super Mario Bros. with its level design, which resembled the classic World 1-1 through its positioning of items, ? Blocks, and enemies like Goombas. The music is also remixed from the Super Mario Bros. overworld theme and the Super Mario World overworld theme. In this chapter, Mario learns the Flip technique from the wizard Bestovius.

In Chapter 1-2, Mario traverses a huge mountain and ends up at Yold Town. There, he meets the Pixl Thoreau. In Chapter 1-3, Mario journeys through a hostile desert and battles Count Bleck's thug, O'Chunks, for the first time.
