Skittlers are arthropod enemies that appear in the Forest levels in Donkey Kong Country Returns and its Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch ports. Skittlers resemble and behave like real world spiders, although they only have six feet instead of eight. They appear in both orange and purple varieties.
History[edit]
Donkey Kong Country series[edit]
Donkey Kong Country Returns / Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D / Donkey Kong Country Returns HD[edit]
In Donkey Kong Country Returns, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, purple Skittlers rise and lower on a web thread, falling to the ground if jumped on. Some purple Skittlers hanging directly above a pit can instantly be defeated from a jump attack instead of falling down. Orange Skittlers lower from their thread and onto the ground by themselves. When on ground, both purple and orange varieties tend to chase after Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, with specific patterns to their behavior: after they land, they proceed walking towards the Kongs and immediately change direction if the characters jump over them. The Skittlers then walk straight ahead a short distance, during which they do not turn around regardless of where the Kongs are situated, unless the Skittlers encounter a wall or the end of a platform. Once they fully walk this designated distance, they will turn around should they detect the Kongs in the opposite direction, repeating the pattern so described until defeated. The only exceptions are some purple Skittlers in the stage Topsy Turvy, which always immediately change direction when jumped over. In addition, some Skittlers in the game may walk off a platform instead of turning around at its edge.
If the Kongs are touched by a Skittler, they lose a heart point. The Kongs cannot approach a Skittler with a Roll Attack if it hangs from a thread, though other attacks are effective against it. When on land, Skittlers can be defeated by any attack, including a roll.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]
In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, several Skittlers can be seen in the background of the level Forest Folly, frozen solid.
WarioWare: Get It Together![edit]
Purple Skittlers reappear in WarioWare: Get It Together! as enemies in the Donkey Kong Country Returns microgame.
