'''Whittles''' are a species of tree spirits appearing in ''[[Super Mario Galaxy 2]]''. They are small, humanoid figures with geometric heads and bodies made entirely out of wood. They appear in numerous galaxies as helpful characters with often simple yet incorrect grammar. Their heads appear to be cut from tree logs, and still feature part of the tree's bark on one side, including a small leaf growing from it. Their heads can be in one of three different shapes: A 90° sector of a log resembling a cube with a rounded side, a 120° sector of log resembling a large pie slice and a long, slightly curved, isosceles triangle cut from a larger log. Their name is taken from the word "whittle", which means to carve something out of wood. It may also be taken as a corruption of "little" due to their small stature.

Whittle, Super Mario Galaxy 2

Whittles are a species of tree spirits appearing in Super Mario Galaxy 2.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

Whittles appear in several galaxies, including the Tall Trunk Galaxy, where they appear in all of the missions. In the first mission, they teach Mario how to use the Blimp Fruit on Yoshi and later on they tell Mario to slide down the gigantic slide to prove his bravery. They are shown to be a very proud and brave race; due to this, they like to prove their bravery by sliding down the big slide in their galaxy and surviving its trials. When someone proves their worth, the Whittles reward them with a Power Star, a symbol of courage. They also consider the giant tree at the center of the Tall Trunk Galaxy sacred.

Whittles also appear in Fluffy Bluff Galaxy and Cloudy Court Galaxy, where they teach Mario how to use the Cloud Flower; Hightail Falls Galaxy, where they teach him how to use the Dash Pepper; and in The Adventure of the Purple Coins in Clockwork Ruins Galaxy, where they tell him how many Purple Coins he should have at certain points.

Whittles are another species which will appear on Starship Mario after Mario obtains the second star in the Tall Trunk Galaxy.

In the game's E3 2009 trailer, Whittles are shown to inhabit the Puzzle Plank Galaxy, but they are not present there in the final game.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party 9[edit]

Several Whittles in Mario Party 9

In Mario Party 9, a Whittle is the one who places the logs to be chopped and Bob-ombs to be dodged by the players in the minigame Logger Heads. Two Whittles that differ in appearance with the others also appear in the background. They also appear in the background of the Step It Up minigame mode, and they congratulate the winning player when they reach the top of the tree. There is also a constellation of them, called Timberheads.

Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]

Whittles make a cameo in Mario Party: Island Tour on the Kamek's Carpet Ride board. They also appear in the minigames Meteor Melee and Deck Hunt where they cheer on the players.

Mario Party: The Top 100[edit]

In Mario Party: The Top 100, Whittles return in the Logger Heads minigame, having the same role as Mario Party 9.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Whittle makes a cameo appearance on the Starship Mario spirit.
