A Warp Box (With Key) is a variant of the standard Warp Box that is locked and must be unlocked in some way. These Warp Boxes appear in a few games throughout the Super Mario series.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
These Warp Boxes first appear in Super Mario 3D World and return in its port, where they appear in a few levels. In all levels they appear in, the player must collect five Key Coins of an area to turn that area's Warp Box into a regular Warp Box.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
These Warp Boxes return in Super Mario Maker 2 exclusively in the Super Mario 3D World style under the name Warp Box (With Key). This time, they may be entered if the player has a Key in their possession. Their object limits are shared with those of regular Warp Boxes. In this game, Mario cannot stand on a Warp Box (With Key) like he could in the original Super Mario 3D World and its port, as any attempt to do so causes him to pass through it.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
Exclusively in the Wii U version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, a single locked Warp Box appears in the level Clear Pipe Cruise, behaving as it did in Super Mario 3D World.
