They have ten HP and can inflict two points of damage to Mario and his allies. They are not really "dark" creatures (in the sense of a Gloomba), just shadow-like Goombas. They are found in the following rooms of the Pit: 001; 002; 003; 008; 016; 056. It is thought that Shadoo, the monster at the bottom of the same pit, created it with its power to clone anyone.
