Ice Mario is a form that Mario or Luigi can take upon touching an Ice Flower in Super Mario Galaxy. In this form, Mario's/Luigi's body turns into solid ice with cold air flowing out and gains the ability to skate on water. A different form of the same name was introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
History[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

While in this form, any water or lava Mario touches freezes solid in the form of a hexagonal platform (which melts after a period of time if left unoccupied). This allows Mario to walk or skate across vast distances of water or lava with ease and safety. Ice Mario can also reach higher places by freezing water spouts and Wall Jumping off of waterfalls, though unlike regular walls, Ice Mario can cling onto waterfalls for a few seconds before he drops down. This form also makes its user immune to fire attacks, as seen when a Magikoopa fires a fireball at Ice Mario; it also prevents damage from torches when the player jumps on it. Ice Mario can also safely defeat ice bats by spinning and stomping, though this is only possible to see with hacking.[1] Like Fire Mario, this power-up has a time limit.
A downside of this power-up is that Ice Mario's midair spin is diminished. Ice Mario's midair spin gains almost no height, unlike Mario's regular form. Therefore, Ice Mario cannot jump as high.
This power-up is introduced in the Freezeflame Galaxy, but can also be found in the Beach Bowl Galaxy and the Deep Dark Galaxy.
This form originally had a freezing ability, which went unused. If the player spun at an Electrogoomba, it would be frozen into an Ice Block that could be slid around by kicking it or destroyed by spinning it, ground-pounding on top of it, or if it slid into a wall. Destroying an Ice Block would have granted the player three Star Bits and a coin. Due to it only freezing Electrogoombas and a bug that causes the player to fall through the ground, this ability may have been unfinished and was scrapped early in development. A similar concept of freezing enemies into Ice Blocks would later be used for a different form of the same name introduced in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but with Iceballs instead.[2]
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
Ice Mario appears as a playable High-End driver in Mario Kart Tour, introduced in the Ice Tour. His special skill is the Ice Flower. Ice Mario shares his animations with Metal Mario but has the same voice clips as regular Mario (albeit with a harsher reverb); he also has his own unique emblem, which is a cyan version of Mario's emblem. In this game, Ice Mario lacks irises like Metal Mario does (although they can still be seen in his artwork, which is reused from Super Mario Galaxy). When Ice Mario appears in a course icon, his artwork is mirrored. There is also an Ice Mario Cup, introduced in the Hammer Bro Tour.
Since his debut tour, Ice Mario has appeared in all regular tour pipes, including All-Clear Pipes. However, he is currently not a part of the Daily Selects set. The following table lists other availabilities for Ice Mario by tour.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
The Ice Flower was originally going to appear in Super Mario Galaxy 2, with an updated version of its theme being present on the disc and a code being able to spawn the Ice Flower, though a model for it does not appear in the game. However, the item was scrapped, and attempting to collect it would result in the game crashing unless other files are readded.[3] Ice Mario is one of two power-ups in Super Mario Galaxy that does not return in its sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, the other being Flying Mario.
Profiles and statistics[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
- Trading card description: A CHILLY kind of flower power, Ice Mario is a form that Mario can take when he grabs an Ice Flower. When he powers up to this transformation, he can walk on any body of water or lava by freezing the liquid in hexagonal platforms and simply walking across.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
- Mario Kart Tour Twitter: Ice Mario is almost as shiny as he is slippery. Just watch out for his Ice Flower! It's a special item that can send opponents sliding forward by freezing their controls for a short time.[4]

Notes[edit]
- The music played during the duration of this power up in Super Mario Galaxy closely resembles the music played for Fire Mario, but is played in A minor.
- In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the ice platforms based on those that Ice Mario/Luigi creates are used in the Shiverburn Galaxy, formed when Ice Meteors fall into lava on the Ice Magma Skate Planet.
- In Mario Golf: World Tour, when using the Ice Flower in item shots, the ball creates ice platforms each time it bounces on the water or terrain, similar to Ice Mario/Luigi's.
