DK Barrels are introduced in Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. They are an item exclusive to the game's New Mode. DK Barrels can be purchased from Cranky Kong's Shop for five Banana Coins. If Donkey Kong brings a DK Barrel with him in a level, is not with Diddy Kong, and is in a state where he can carry a barrel, the player can tap the Touch Screen to have Donkey Kong throw out the DK Barrel. (DK Barrels cannot be held, only thrown.) Instructions for using a DK Barrel are present on the Touch Screen if the player enters a level with a DK Barrel equipped, but go away if a level reloads while the player has no DK Barrels. Throwing a DK Barrel has all the effects a normal DK Barrel found in a level has: defeating enemies, breaking Burlap Hanging Sacks, calling out Diddy Kong, and restoring Donkey Kong's hearts. (States where Donkey Kong cannot hold Barrels include while in Mine Carts, while standing on Mine Carts, inside Rocket Barrels, on Rocket Barrels, on Rambi, in Barrel Cannons, while shooting out of Barrel Cannons, while Clinging, while ground-pounding, and while holding any other object.)

In Donkey Kong Country Returns HD, DK Barrels are available in Modern Mode.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

While DK Barrels do not appear in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Funky's Fly 'n' Buy sells Diddy Kong Barrels, Dixie Kong Barrels, and Cranky Kong Barrels for 15 Banana Coins each. Each of these items enables Donkey Kong to start a level with the barrel's character. If Donkey Kong already has a buddy, then the Barrel is inert until he does not have a buddy. After a short delay, signified by it growing and shrinking, it activates to give Donkey Kong the specified character. Donkey Kong is unable to throw these barrels in this game.

In Funky Mode of the Nintendo Switch port, Funky Kong is unable to use any of the three Barrels.
