Rupees are the currency in Hyrule, resembling diamonds, that originate from the The Legend of Zelda series. They are the equivalent to the coins often collected in the Mario series. They play a role in the Hyrule Circuit course purchased in the first Mario Kart 8 DLC pack, The Legend of Zelda X Mario Kart 8. Rupees can be obtained from Item Boxes exclusively in the Hyrule Circuit courses, and are scattered throughout the track, replacing coins found in all the other tracks. The Rupees that replace the coins give the players a small boost and increase top speed when more are collected, up to a max of 10.
