It can be unlocked by connecting with 100 people with StreetPass, or by collecting 10,000 coins. The Gold Glider does not offer any stat boosts and is therefore a purely aesthetic unlockable. It does, however, slightly increases the kart's gliding distance.

The Gold Glider returns as an unlockable glider in Mario Kart 8. Instead of being entirely gold, it is now black with a gold ring and a number eight on top.
