Kong Roll
The Kong Roll[1][2] is an upgraded version of the Roll Attack that lasts up until hitting an obstacle or arbitrarily. It can be performed by Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong Country Returns, its Nintendo 3DS port, its Nintendo Switch port, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, though he needs the help of one of the other Kongs to use the attack. The move is very similar to the Roll Attack Dixie Kong and Kiddy Kong perform by teaming up in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!.
History[edit]
Donkey Kong Country Returns (3D / HD)[edit]
In order to use the Kong Roll, Diddy Kong has to be riding on Donkey Kong's back. When the player shakes , Donkey Kong starts to perform a Barrel Roll. As he rolls, Diddy runs along on top of Donkey Kong to keep his momentum. Like the Barrel Roll and Cartwheel Attack, the Kong Roll is faster than the Kongs' normal movement speed, can be used to eliminate most enemies in the Kongs' path, and allows them to Roll Jump. Unlike the two other moves, the Kong Roll continues for as long as the player keeps shaking
. The Kong Roll is superior to the Barrel Roll and Cartwheel Attack for Roll Jumping the player does not have to worry about starting their roll close enough to the edge of a platform or about their roll ending before they perform the Roll Jump. It can also get farther and lower from a platform while still rolling compared to the other rolling methods, so a following Roll Jump can start from farther off a platform. The Kong Roll also improves on both moves's ability to ignore steep slopes, as it can easily roll across an entire slope rather than having to stop partway.
In Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, the move works in the same way, but there are different controls associated with it. In the default Circle Pad-based control scheme, pressing and
initiates the Kong Roll and continuously pressing the buttons continues it. In the alternate Control Pad-based control scheme, the
and
buttons do the same.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]
The Kong Roll returns in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, where it operates in the same way as before; the secondary Kong runs on top of Donkey Kong to allow Donkey Kong to roll perpetually. While the Kong Roll can still be used with Diddy Kong, it can also be executed with Dixie Kong or Cranky Kong while either is riding Donkey Kong. In the Nintendo Switch version's New Mode, Funky Kong can Kong-roll without a buddy.
