Haunted Holes[1] are obstacles that appear only in the Choco-Ghost House in Super Mario World. They are holes in the floor that move back and forth within a small area, functioning as mobile bottomless pits. One Haunted Hole passes under a door, which can be entered only during the periods where it is not floating above the hole.

The Haunted Holes' visual effect is not achieved by removing the floor—instead, the floor is covered up with a solid black portion of the Haunted Holes' sprite, which exactly matches the background behind them.[2]

Naming

The Haunted Hole is translated as the Ghost Gap in the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia.[3]
