The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Online Challenge was an online Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tournament open to residents of Japan. It was part of a number of Online Challenges held across Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Splatoon 2 which acted as qualifiers for the tournaments at Nintendo Live 2022. Players could only register for the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Online Challenge by way of an invitation received from Nintendo of Japan via e-mail; to be eligible for the invitation, players needed a Nintendo Account with an e-mail notification setting enabled. These conditions had to be satisfied until August 14, 2021, and the registration itself could be performed until August 19, 2021. The top four players of the online tournament went on to participate in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Online Challenge Final Stage.

One hundred tournament participants were selected at random to receive a limited edition Mario Kart 8 Deluxe-themed folding fan.
