Kamek, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Sluggy the Unshaven is a massive Sluggy found in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. He is a mid-boss encountered in the fort of World 5. He is a see-through slug with a face, hair in various places and a visible, and hairy, heart. He was originally a tiny, nontransparent Sluggy until Kamek used his magic on him. The hair growing his heart is likely a reference to the Japanese idiom「心臓に毛が生えている」(shinzō ni ke ga haeteiru), which literally translates to "hair growing from the heart" and figuratively means "to be shameless". Like regular Sluggies, Sluggy the Unshaven sports eyelashes in his official artwork, but lacks them in-game. Unlike his smaller counterparts, however, this is not attributable to graphical limitations on account of his large size. To defeat him, the Yellow Yoshi has to throw eggs at his heart, pushing through his gelatinous skin.

In Sluggy's open-air room is an Egg Plant. However, he is at the very edge of the room. Once Yoshi has collected enough eggs, the player must lob eggs at the slug's skin. Every time an egg hits the skin, he is pushed inward and the egg bounces off. Yoshi can then pick up the egg and lob it again. Once the skin is pushed back enough, Yoshi can shoot Sluggy's heart (which is the slug's weak point). With each hit, Sluggy's heart beats faster. After four hits, the heart shrinks until it pops, and Sluggy the Unshaven's body slides off the stage.

Sluggy is incapable of knocking Baby Mario off Yoshi's back, making this the only boss fight where stars cannot be lost. According to the Player's Guides, Sluggy the Unshaven does not actually mean any harm.[1][2] However, he continuously slides forward toward the edge of the room, making it necessary to defeat him before he pushes Yoshi off the stage into the pit.

Much like Froggy and Naval Piranha, it is possible to see the boss before Kamek magically alters him. However, the player cannot destroy Sluggy before Kamek appears, like they can with Naval Piranha.

Profiles and statistics

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

  • Player's Guide: Halfway through the snowbound landscape of World 5, Yoshi encounters the first boss in video-game history whose heart has a 5-o'clock shadow. Sluggy oozes with the desire to leave Yoshi out in the cold, but the dynamic dino can stay warm if he keeps his cool. Slug Sluggy by pitching eggs at the bewhiskered one's heart, but be warned: Kamek's magic potion quickly fixes dents in Sluggy's slimy skin![3]
  • Super Power Club Cards bio:[4]
    • Description: Big and blubbery. Hides out in his fort. Likes to slime dinos and baby plumbers.
    • Favorite Movie: The Blob
    • How to Beat Him: Make sure you have a full supply of eggs before grappling with this gelatinous giant! Shoot enough eggs to rip open a hole to Sluggy's pink heart.
  • Shogakukan guide: 透けて見えるハ一卜型の心臓が急所。ふにょふにょしてて手ごたえがないせいか、どうも翮争心がわかない。[5] (The transparent, heart-shaped heart is the vital point. It is very soft and not very firm, so it is hard to feel the struggle.)

Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

  • Shogakukan guide: ワールド5-4のボスで、やわらかい体におおわれている。タマゴを投げて体をへこませ、透けて見えるハ一卜に4回ダメージをあたえよう。[6](The boss of World 5-4 is covered with a soft body. Throw an egg at it to dent its body, and damage its visible heart four times.)

Trivia

  • Hacking methods show that if enemies are shot into Sluggy the Unshaven, they become glitched sprites.[citation needed]
  • A preview for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island refers to Sluggy the Unshaven as "Giant Watabo",[7] although the previous page refers to Fuzzies as Watabos.[8] Incidentally, an early version of Sluggies resemble Fuzzies.
