In many Mario games, particularly RPGs, there is an event or cutscene in which during or afterward, the player becomes incapable of saving their progress. This event is often referred to as the point of no return, due to the player being unable to return to any previous locations to collect items or complete sidequests upon reaching a certain point in the game. Just before this point is reached, a character in the game usually warns the player of the point of no return.

In most games, the point of no return comes at the start of a cutscene in which during or afterward, the final boss is fought, after which the credits are shown, sometimes with a victory parade, officially ending the game. If the player loses the final battle or quits the game after reaching the point of no return, they are able to load the game from their last save point.

In Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, the point of no return comes with quite a few exceptions.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

When Mario and Luigi reach the top of Neo Bowser Castle, where Princes Peach is behind bars, the point of no return is reached. As they approach her, Bowser appears holding the Dream Stone, threatening to destroy them all. Starlow and Peach use the power of good thoughts to shatter the stone, as Bowser inhales the fragments to become Dreamy Bowser. Once he is defeated, the castle begins to collapse. As Mario, Luigi, Peach, Starlow, and Dreambert make their way through the castle, they pass any Save Blocks along the way, preventing the player from ever getting a chance to save their progress. When they reach the area Antasma is fought in, they all fall off the castle, only to be rescued by the Zeekeeper.

Everyone gathers at Pi'illo Castle, where they turn the remains of the Dream Stone into a Dream Coin, which is then shattered to spread thousands of coins. With peace finally restored to Pi'illo Island, the credits are shown in the form of picture puzzles.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

At the top of Neo Bowser Castle, after defeating the Koopalings, Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario reach a lift which takes them to the final battle with Bowser and Paper Bowser. Just before they board the lift, Starlow informs them that this is their last chance and asks if they are ready to take on the Bowsers. If the player answers "Yes", the point of no return is reached. The lift takes them to the arena where the Bowsers are waiting. After they are battled and defeated, Paper Bowser is sucked back into the book, while Bowser himself falls off the roof. Mario, Luigi, Paper Mario, and Starlow return to Princess Peach's castle, where all the paper characters jump back into their book. After the farewells, a victory parade is held showing off the papercrafts, as the credits are shown.
