Template:Species-infobox Black Yoshis are Yoshi variants that first appear in Yoshi's Story and have made recurring appearances in the Mario franchise since, alongside other colored variants of Yoshis. In Yoshi's Story, they and White Yoshis are rarer than the other Yoshi colors but have bonus abilities to compensate for their rarity. In later installments, they are found either as color options for Yoshi with identical abilities or have slightly different stats than Yoshis in some of the Mario sports games, but do not have any additional bonuses attached to them.

Black Yoshi's color scheme has been consistent with a few exceptions. Black Yoshis typically wear white shoes, though the Black Yoshi in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door wears yellow shoes and the Black Yoshi depicted in a pre-release screenshot for Yoshi's Story originally had light-blue shoes.

Yoshi's Story

Black Yoshi

Black Yoshis in Yoshi's Story can be found in large, hidden eggs on pages 2-1 or 2-4. Black Yoshis and White Yoshis are the only Yoshis in Yoshi's Story that enjoy all the fruit, even the red Peppers. In addition, Black Yoshis can eat other things that the rest can't, such as Black Shy Guys. Another special power he possess in Yoshi's Story is that whenever the Smile Meter is full, his eggs explode in gigantic explosions, destroying more than one enemy at a time. Additionally, whenever a Black Yoshi is a Super Happy Yoshi, his mobility while using the Flutter Jump is increased drastically until the invincibility wears off. Black Yoshi has the lowest voice of any Yoshi in the game. If the player loses Black Yoshi, the White Shy Guy cannot retrieve him unless the game has been beaten at least once with Black Yoshi in the party.

If one of the Blurps in Jungle Puddle eats a Black Yoshi, they display an upset emotion bubble, suggesting that one of the "extra powers" Black Yoshis have is to taste bad to enemies.

Like the other Yoshis, he can be freed from his egg, where he runs to push a Chomp Rock. He is the second to hatch when opening the Yoob egg.

Mario Kart series

In Mario Kart 8, Black Yoshi appears as one of the alternate skins for Yoshi. It is available through buying both the The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing x Mario Kart 8 DLC packs. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Black Yoshi is included as an alternate color for Yoshi within the base game.

A Red Yoshi and Black Yoshi are included as a selectable palette swap for Yoshi in Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U

Black Yoshi is included as a new palette swap option for Yoshi in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U. This is the only alternate costume of Yoshi in this game that does not return in the next game, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate due to it being removed in order to make room for a new costume based on Yoshi's appearance in the upcoming game Yoshi's Crafted World, which it replaced.
