A Beanie is an enemy that first appears in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and appears in later installments such as Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. It appears as a large, green bean with feet and a face, and seems to be the Beanish version of the Goombas from the Mushroom Kingdom (just like how the Parabeanies seem to be the Beanish version of the Paragoombas from the Mushroom Kingdom). Their name most likely comes from a saying, "meanie beanie", due to their mean expression and their appearance.

History

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga / Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Beanies are mainly found in Hoohoo Mountain, though they can be seen in other locations, such as Beanbean Outskirts, Beanbean Castle (during the fight with Queen Bean if the Bros. stomp one of her rolling beans), Chucklehuck Woods, Oho Ocean Seabed and Gwarhar Lagoon (by cracking the Peanuts found there (in the latter location, they will float up to the surface once this happens, and thus cannot be fought). In the overworld, they chase after Mario and Luigi in an attempt to ram into them, though they will occasionally trip on their face while doing this.

In battle, Beanies attack Mario or Luigi by simply ramming into them. They will sometimes trip before ramming, and the Mario Bros. must not jump when they trip onto the floor. The type of ram can be determined by the Beanie's proximity to the target brother; if they are far away from the bro, they will trip, and if they are not, they will not trip. Beanies are weak to fire-based moves, so the Firebrand Hand Power and Fire Bros. will deal critical damage to them. Defeating Beanies may cause them to drop Woo Beans.

It is possible to find a golden variety in Chucklehuck Woods and Oho Ocean Seabed by revealing them from the Pestnuts that are found in those locations. These Beanies attack similar to their normal variations, though they are more powerful, have a high chance of fleeing, and will always drop the Spike Badge when defeated (if the Game Boy Horror SP is equipped, they will drop the Chuckola Badge instead).

Beanies reappear in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, functioning the same as in the original game. They also appear as the first enemies encountered in Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser, where they are first fought in the level Go, Goomba, Go! They are Melee troopers, and attack by charging into opponents. Their Special Skill, Mega Tackle, allows them to charge quickly into a targeted opponent, causing more damage than a regular charge. Several Beanies also attempt to attack the Koopalings when they not only intruded upon their turf but also proceeded to ignore them, although the Koopalings (who were otherwise occupied discussing how to find Bowser) managed to easily subdue them before intimidating them into fleeing. One Beanie also lines up to be Popple's new Rookie after his last one went missing, only to be turned down.

Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

In Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, the Gold Beanie can summon a bunch of Beanies to chase Mario as a part of one of its attacks. During this, the Gold Beanie will hide behind one while the group of Beanies charge at Mario from behind. In this game, Beanies lack the sprout on their head.
