In Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Banana Coins are found in various places in each level. They can be used to buy various items from several of the Kongs.

Donkey Kong 64

Banana Coins, from Donkey Kong 64.

In Donkey Kong 64, they came in five different colors, and each of the five Kongs could only collect Banana Coins of their own color. The colors were yellow for Donkey Kong, red for Diddy Kong, blue for Lanky Kong, purple for Tiny Kong and green for Chunky Kong. Numerous Banana Coins were scattered throughout the levels of the game for the Kongs to seek out. The Kongs needed to use these coins to purchase equipment and upgrades from Cranky Kong, Funky Kong, and Candy Kong.

There were also special multi-colored Banana Coins that could only be found when a Kong unearthed a DK Dirt Pile with the charge move learned from the Banana Fairy Queen. These coins were larger than regular Banana Coins, and, more importantly, they added five Banana Coins to each Kong's total, regardless of whether a certain Kong had been rescued or not.

Totals

The total amounts of Banana Coins each Kong collects are as follows:

  • Donkey: 174
  • Diddy: 178
  • Lanky: 185
  • Tiny: 193
  • Chunky: 219
Total: 949

During the game, each Kong spends 21 coins on personal upgrades, Donkey spends an extra 2 on the DK Arcade game, and a total of 53 coins are spent on shared upgrades. At the end of Donkey Kong 64, the final Banana Coin total is 789.

DK Jungle Climber

Banana Coins returned in DK Jungle Climber. In this game, five were featured in each level. After the game was beaten, they could be spent on extra levels.

Donkey Kong Country Returns

A Banana Coin

Banana Coins reappear in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, where they can be used to buy various items in Cranky Kong's Shop. Unlike in previous games, these coins have an image of a single banana on them, while others have 3.

It also appears as a prize on the Slot Machine Barrel.

The Kongs can collect up to 999 Banana Coins.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Banana Coins return in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. In this game, they have a similar appearance to Donkey Kong Country Returns, but they are colored golden instead of yellow and continually sparkle. Similarly to Donkey Kong Country Returns, they are used to buy items from Funky Kong's shop, and they can be obtained in many of the same ways. Like it's previous game the players can collect up to 999 banana coins.
