A Heart Boost is a power-up item that appears in Donkey Kong Country Returns, its Nintendo 3DS port, its Nintendo Switch port, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. When equipped, it serves as additional heart for the player's health. The heart has a white plus in the middle. Heart Boosts can be bought for ten Banana Coins from Cranky Kong's Shop in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Funky's Fly 'n' Buy in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. In Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D's New Mode and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD's Modern Mode, Heart Boosts cost three Banana Coins.

When player takes damage, they lose the heart of a Heart Boost before their normal hearts. If this happens they can regain the heart through any means that recovers a regular heart. This is unlike the Banana Juice item, whose ability to block damage cannot be replenished. The game prioritizes restoring normal hearts before those of a Heart Boost. As with all inventory items, the Heart Boost's effect wears off if the player leaves the level. Losing a life does not cause the player to lose a Heart Boost, also unlike the Banana Juice.
