The Beanbean Map is very helpful in the game as it makes some items and locations easy to find. When the player goes to the suitcase and goes to the map, there will be a red flag on the areas the brother must visit, and the heads of Mario and Luigi on the areas where they are (with the name of the area being shown when the player presses a button).

When the brothers are looking for the Beanstar pieces and Bean Fruit, those items will appear on the map. The hiding spots of Bean Fruit will be revealed and the location of the Beanstar pieces will be revealed as well. At the same time, the flag will disappear. Also, when using a green pipe in the game, the map will come up. If Mario and Luigi have unlocked more than one green pipe, they will be able to go to another location in the Beanbean Kingdom where there is another pipe.

During the majority of the game, the upper-left corner of the map is folded over. However, as soon as Bowletta launches her attack on the Beanbean Kingdom's castle town from Bowser's Castle, it is unfolded, revealing the castle. In the remake, the corner is not folded, and when Bowletta launches her attack, a picture of the castle is taped onto the map.
