Special Items[1] are a class of items that appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its port. They are stored for later use, unlike standard items, and can be selected for immediate use during a level via the pause menu. Special Items cannot be used in boss battles. They can be collected by winning them in Bonus Challenges and Mini Battles. The Anytime Egg, Anywhere POW, and Magnifying Glass can be acquired only through Bonus Challenges. It is possible to save up to to 27 Special Items. The types and their effects are as follows:
- 10-Point Star – increases the Countdown Timer by ten
- 20-Point Star – increases the Countdown Timer by 20
- Anytime Egg – gives a Yoshi a full supply of six eggs
- Anywhere POW – turns all enemies on the screen into Stars (or coins if the player already has 30 stars)
- Winged Cloud Maker – turns all enemies on the screen into Winged Clouds
- Magnifying Glass – reveals which coins are red coins and secret Winged Clouds
- Super Green Watermelon – places a green watermelon in a Yoshi's mouth, allowing him to spit seeds
- Super Red Watermelon – places a red watermelon in a Yoshi's mouth, allowing him to breathe fire
- Super Blue Watermelon – places a blue watermelon in a Yoshi's mouth, allowing him to freeze enemies
