Spike balls[1] are objects in Super Mario 3D World and its port. They are first encountered in Clear Pipe Cruise. These giant green seeds with yellow spikes are found inside Clear Pipes, blocking parts of them. If the player hits a spike ball, they not only take damage but are also ejected backwards in the pipe, so its destruction is necessary to pass. Some Green Stars are found among spike balls. Spike balls can be destroyed by a fireball from Fire Mario, a baseball, Invincible Mario, or White Tanooki Mario.
Spike balls reappear in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and its ports, where they retain both their design and functionality from Super Mario 3D World. They appear in levels with Clear Pipes such as Clear Pipe Puzzleplex and block the way of the player, though the player can destroy them using the Super Pickax power-up.
