Sand blocks[1][2][3] (or sand-blocks),[4] also called sand cubes,[5] sandy blocks,[6] or sand stones,[6] are a type of block in Super Mario Sunshine. They appear in many secret courses. If Mario walks over sand blocks, they collapse and disappear, then reappear after a certain amount of time. Their function is similar to that of the shrinking platforms that are later found in Super Mario Galaxy and the 3D version of the Donut Blocks as they appear in Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World. Similar blocks make up the body of the Sand Bird; however, these do not collapse when Mario walks on them.
