Sandmaarghs are enemies in Super Mario 3D Land. They are variants of Magmaarghs that live in sand instead of lava. They are somewhat dinosaur-like, with red spines going down their back.
History[edit]
Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
In Super Mario 3D Land, Sandmaarghs appear in desert themed levels where they will follow Mario or Luigi while hiding under the sand and when they get close enough, they pop out and attempt to bite down on them. If the Sandmaargh fails at biting the player, the Sandmaarghs can be attacked by having the player jump on their heads or by having the player swing their Tanooki Tail directly at the Sandmaargh. While underground, their shadows can be seen above ground, thus allowing the player to watch out for them before they attack. Sandmaarghs first appear in World 3-1, and also appear in World 5-1 and Special 6-1.
Though Sandmaarghs do not return in Super Mario 3D World, Hisstocrat and the snake minions he summons during his boss fight somewhat resemble them, being reptilian enemies that burrow out of the sand and can attempt to bite the player. The Bitefrosts from Super Mario Odyssey also function as similar enemies, attacking in the same way as Sandmaarghs and having similar shadows visible when underground.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
Sandmaarghs appear in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam as enemies in Doop Doop Dunes. Like a few other enemies, they have no paper counterparts. In the field, Sandmaarghs burrow under the sand to strike intruders into their territory from below; if a bro gets eaten by one in the overworld, the battle starts with the Sandmaargh chewing the bro and inflicting high damage on him, making it similar to a First Strike in the Paper Mario series. In combat, the Sandmaargh attacks by inhaling. The target has to use his hammer to knock away the obstacles in his attempt to escape, as getting hit by one causes the victim to get pushed into the creature's mouth. Sandmaarghs also appear in the Paper Toad Tailgate and Paper Toad Trail Trials missions, in which Mario and co. must jump at the right time before they come out of the sand while rescuing the Paper Toads, otherwise they will eat one.
Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit]
Sandmaarghs appear in Balmy Dunes in Mario Golf: Super Rush, where they now appear in a massive size. They also appear to be made out of sand, just as how Magmaarghs are made out of lava, as balls can be shot into them, although doing so results in a stroke penalty.
