Pile Driver Micro-Goombas are a special variety of Micro Goomba that hide in Brick Blocks. They have only appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its remakes. They are quite strong for their size, as they are able to jump extremely high and long while lifting the much larger Brick Block. The Pile Driver Micro-Goomba is also resistant to fireballs, as it is protected by its Brick Block (which cannot normally be destroyed by fire attacks as well). While their counterparts can only slow down the Mario Brothers, Pile Driver Micro-Goombas can directly damage them.

Pile Driver Micro-Goombas first appeared in World 2-1, the first area of Desert Land, and were a staple enemy in the various desert and sky levels throughout the rest of the game. In these levels, Pile Driver Micro-Goombas were typically hidden among normal Brick Blocks, although some stayed out in the open. When a Mario Brother approached the hidden Pile Driver Micro-Goomba, the creature would jump high in the air and attempt to crush the hero. However, a Pile Driver Micro-Goomba would lift its Brick Block a couple of times before jumping, providing the plumber with enough time to dodge the upcoming attack. The Mario Brothers could destroy these enemies by stomping the block-shielded Goomba, hitting the creature with the Raccoon tail, or by tossing a Koopa Shell at it.

Pile Driver Micro-Goombas first appear in World 2-1, the first area of Desert Land, and are a staple enemy in the various desert and sky levels throughout the rest of Super Mario Bros. 3. They are disguised as grounded bricks that can be distinguished by the fact that they do not glisten (except in Super Mario All-Stars, which gave them a light-colored outline instead, but this was changed back in Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3). When Mario or Luigi approaches its brick, the Pile Driver Micro-Goomba moves slightly to show a pair of feet underneath the brick, then jumps high in the air and attempts to land on the player character to damage him. These enemies are resistant to fireballs and can be defeated by stomping them, hitting them with a Raccoon tail, or tossing a Koopa Shell at them.

Pile Driver Micro-Goombas can be distinguished from their surroundings. Regular Brick Blocks glisten; Pile Driver Micro-Goombas' Brick Blocks do not. However, in Super Mario All-Starss Super Mario Bros. 3 remake, they glistened like any other Brick Block, but had a lighter-colored outline. Super Mario Advance 4 returned the Pile Driver Micro-Goomba's Brick Block to its original non-glistening form (though it was, of course, updated Super Mario All-Stars-style along with all of Super Mario Advance 4s other sprites).

Although no Pile Driver Micro-Goombas appear, a group of Pile Driver Micro-Goomba-like blocks makes one small appearance on The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 in the episode "A Toadally Magical Adventure." Although they have similar characteristics and look like Pile Driver Micro-Goombas, they are real bricks brought to life and are referred to simply as "blocks." These blocks were created by Toad's pipe creatures after they rebelled against him.

Although they're unrelated, Blockhoppers from New Super Mario Bros. are fairly similar to Pile Driver Micro-Goombas in that they, too, hide in blocks. However, Blockhoppers are not at all related to Goombas (being blue robots) and can hide as stacks of blocks, and also have the ability to mimic ? Blocks. Super Mario 3D Land also introduces Fake Blocks, similar enemies which have Tanooki tails they can whip with.

Pile Driver Micro-Goombas[1] (also stylized as Pile-driver Micro-Goombas),[2] referred to as "fake bricks" by Fred Savage in the Celebrity Profiles section in the 9th issue of Nintendo Power,[3] are a special variety of Mini Goomba that hides in a Brick Block. They appear in Super Mario Bros. 3 and its reissues.

History

Super Mario Bros. 3 / Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3

Blocks similar to Pile Driver Micro-Goomba from The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
A group of blocks on The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 in the episode "A Toadally Magical Adventure"

NES Remix series

In NES Remix 2 and Ultimate NES Remix, Pile Driver Micro-Goombas, simply referred to as Mini Goombas, are featured as a Super Mario Bros. 3 challenge, where the player has to defeat three of them in World 2-1 within 20 seconds.
