It initially appears to be asleep with its petals retracted and the arrow missing, but once the player passes through one, the face changes into a smiley, the arrow appears, and the petals unfold. In a similar vein to Checkpoint Rings in the Yoshi's Island games, checkpoints refill roughly a quarter of each Yoshi's Health Meter, as well as turning any onscreen enemies into hearts. Most areas have the arrows point right or left, but in one course, one checkpoint has its arrow point diagonally up and left.
