"Im Pilzewunderland" is the first story of Zur Fernseh-Serie Super Mario Bros. - Spiele und Geschichten. This story serves as a prequel of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, detailing how Mario, Luigi, and Toad managed to rescue Princess Toadstool from King Koopa prior to the events of the show.
Plot synopsis
King Koopa is sitting on his throne in the Mushroom Castle as two Mushrooms look at him, having taken over the Mushroom Kingdom with his Koopa Pack and locked Princess Toadstool in a golden cage to delight in her suffering. However, he does not expect Mario and Luigi, two Italian plumbers from Brooklyn, who were sucked down into a hidden Warp Zone while fixing a drainpipe of a bathtub. Toad, the personal page and confidant of Princess Toadstool, has also managed to escape from the castle and tells the Mario Bros. about King Koopa's rule over the Mushroom Kingdom, with them immediately agreeing to help him free Princess Toadstool.
The three sneak into a castle through a screet passage, led by Toad, who knows his way around the castle very well. However, they soon realize that freeing the princess is not possible without further action, as King Koopa does not let her out of her sight. When one of King Koopa's Koopa Troopa guards, holding a battle axe, approaches, the three friends quickly flee to avoid being discovered. Aimlessly, they run towards a fountain, with Luigi accidentally pushing Mario into it and the latter being drenched by the fountain. Though his friends Luigi and Toad find this funny, Mario does not, who would rather have this happen to King Koopa. He then realizes that this would certainly remove him from his throne, and the Princess could be freed.
Mario grabs his brother Luigi and reminds him that they are plumbers; their trade could be useful to help free Princess Toadstool. After all, where there is a fountain, there are pipes, and the water could be diverted right to King Koopa. Luigi is enthusiastic about his brother's plan and hopes that they will show off their skills this time. Toad quickly leads the Mario Bros. into the basement so that they can make certain adjustments to the plumbing.
Soon the pipes are laid in such a way that they lead into the throne room of the castle. Toad is especially excited to turn on the faucet at a signal from Mario so that the water rushes through the pipes. King Koopa is not prepared for such an attack, and, with a tremendous force, a beam of water shoots directly into his face, and the key to Princess Toadstool's cage slips from his claws. However, the Mario Bros. and Toad do not consider that water is the element of King Koopa.
After overcoming his surprise, King Koopa stands up and heads wildly towards his attackers. Meanwhile, Luigi has freed the Princess and hands Mario a Fire Flower, which gives him "Pasta Power," turning him into Super Mario. With his firepower, he holds King Koopa and leads his friends outside without interference. Princess Toadstool thanks him greatly, knowing that her kingdom will soon be free again.
