The Trash Pit is an area within Bowser's body in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey; it was originally called the Junk Spot in the demo for the original game.[1] It is located in his colon. True to its name, the Trash Pit is full of miscellaneous junk, and it is where Mario, Luigi, and Starlow end up after they and all the others present at the meeting in Peach's Castle get inhaled by Bowser.

Mario falls into the beginning of the area, and he searches for a while before he stumbles upon Starlow, who is trapped in an amoeba. Once Mario frees Starlow, a Goombule battles him. After the battle, Mario and Starlow proceed into another room, where they find Luigi, who is attached by his head to a pipe-like object with a bubble. They free him and then stumble into ten Attack Pieces, and Mario and Luigi learn how to kick a shell at their enemies. Mario and Luigi also get the hammers and learn how to use them in this area.

Once the Mario Bros. finish the Trash Pit, they are able to access other areas in Bowser's body. The Funny Bone, Toad Square, and the Challenge Node are the first areas that get unlocked.

In the 3DS remake, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and several Mushroomers are eaten by Bowser, and the former two end up in the Trash Pit on the title screen.

During the first visit to the Trash Pit, The Path of Secrets plays. This is an unsettling tune in C-sharp minor that loops about once every minute. After Bowser regains his consciousness in Cavi Cape, the track only plays inside Bowser's body when he is exploring the path to his castle, the Underground Tunnel, the Toad Town Caves, and the Tower of Yikk; a more defined remix is played outside Bowser's body.

Prima Official Game Guide description

  • "Whoa. What happened? Mario and Luigi are now actually inside Bowser. And predictably, it's kind of icky within the Koopa King's body. Bowser may be big and strong, but he hasn't exactly been taking great care of of himself. Working inside of him are dozens or irritable cells and antibodies that are determined to make sure no purity in the system goes unpunished, and that definitely includes Mario and Luigi. The Bros. have no choice but to poke around inside Bowser's body to find a way out. However, until they can discover the means of escaping Bowser's body, they might as well try to help the big lug save Princess Peach and stop Fawful as best they can from their front row seats to the Bowser Show."
