Rammerheads are shark enemies that appear in Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Their English name seems to be a portmanteau of "hammerhead" and "ram." They appear only in two levels: Rammerhead Reef and Pipeline Boom Lagoon. A smaller variant called a Small Rammerhead occurs in Captain Toad Makes a Splash.
Rammerheads resemble hammerhead sharks with wide, studded heads similar to spiked rollers. Only the heads of Rammerheads causes damage, and they are defeated only when struck by the player character in their Invincible form or if Ground Pounded in their Lucky Cat form. The Rammerheads with the widest heads are a drab purple and typically swim in circles, emulating Fire Bars. In dimly lit areas, their bodies appear luminescent. The narrow-headed Rammerheads are pinkish and are typically trailed by bubbles that contain items. Some of the pinkish Rammerheads leap out of the water. In the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia, the narrow-headed sharks are the ones recognized as "Small Rammerheads,"[1] whereas the one from Captain Toad Makes a Splash goes by that name on Mario Portal.[2]
In Bowser's Fury, Cat Rammerheads[citation needed] appear in Lake Lapcat on the path between Clawswipe Colosseum and Trickity Tower. They are functionally identical to their standard counterparts, but appear with fur, cat ears, and a cat tail. When jumping out of the water, their eyes look at Mario's position.
