The 'Shroom:Issue 158/Pipe Plaza
Director’s Notes
Welcome to May! I'm officially done with high school! Graduation things are weird right now (mine was supposed to be the day after this releases, but they pushed it back to June so we could maybe have a chance at walking across a stage. We're filming a virtual thing as backup, however) but on the bright side, I can actually do most of the things I've been wanting to do since quarantine started! There's at least three different anime I've been meaning to start before now, but I've only really gotten two episodes in on one of them. But now since I have a bit extra free time, I can actually do that now, so I'm happy.
No 'Shroom Recap this month, but on the bright side, it will be back next month before continuing as normal in July. And in other news, GPM1000 returns with Mario Calendar after a bit of a hiatus! Don't forget, if you're interested in writing sections like these and more, you can always check out the sign up page!
Enjoy this month's edition of Pipe Plaza!

Mario Calendar
Wow, it really has been a while! I'm sure most of you probably don't remember me or this section, but I'm GPM1000, and this is the Mario Calendar! This is a fun place to look back on Mario history and see how far we've came! It's quite a basic section: here is where I list every game that comes out in a month! And it's May, so here's every Mario game to come out in the month of May. And to those wondering about my extended hiatus, it's a long story, but long story short, sometimes I wish computers would work a little better. Alright, here we go!

Overall, I'd say it was a fairly solid month for Mario games! The month started off a bit slow, but it included games like Mario Party 3, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, New Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Galaxy 2! And of course, it ended with Mario Kart 8! Anyways, I hope you enjoyed Mario Calendar! It feels good to be back! See you next month :)
Anniversary Announcements

Welcome to Anniversary Announcements part 2! I hope you are all doing well in these weird times.
The Spike Guys
As mentioned last month, the discussion of which venue to hold the traditional chat party has been discussed during one of the meetings. The chat party is where everyone watching the ceremony may join in and talk about the awards and presentations live as they are posted to the ceremony forum threads, as well as where the next presentation is announced.
For years now, the party is held in the IRC chatroom of #mwikiawards on the DarkMyst network, the same network as the official Super Mario Wiki chatroom #mwchat, which can most easily be accessed through MarioWiki:Chat. Last year, the idea was coined to instead use the official Discord server of the wiki, as Discord offers a generally more convenient and easier chat experience, including the availability of infinite logs. This wasn't done then, as the idea was only coined one day prior to the ceremony.
During the second meeting, the idea was revisited and reconsidered. While the overall pros of using Discord have been considered, the discussion ended in favour of using IRC, for several reasons. One includes the stability of Discord vs. IRC, in that if Discord has an outage in the region a server is hosted, the entire server will be unusable, whereas IRC has split networks that will allow people to continue chatting if one part is out. Even if this happens, it is less frequent on DarkMyst than Discord. A second reason is that one explicitly has to join the IRC channel, and is thus more likely to actually be interested in the anniversary proceedings, whereas in Discord there will be crowds of people that are generally interested in the wiki, but not necessarily its anniversary. Thirdly, to join an IRC channel, one does not need to register an account, entering a nickname for a session is enough, while on Discord you need to register an account using an email address, something not everyone might be willing to do for a once-a-year event.
During this discussion, it has also occurred that there are various ways to interact with an IRC network. As IRC, Internet Relay Chat, is not an application, but a protocol, there exist many different ways to connect to a network, which may spark confusion in how to do so. The easiest way for our specific purposes would be to simply go to MarioWiki:Chat on our very wiki, which embeds a web client (Mibbit), and join #mwikiawards from there. This way is currently the most advertised. Some users may find that they want to join using different clients, be they more convenient to use, more stable, or better suited for mobile devices. Informing visitors of the possible options and how-to's to make IRC in general more accessible is therefore something that is planned.
Tournaments
There is already more activity on the side of tournaments! A thread has been created by Fawfulthegreat64 (Talk Page · Forum Profile) to gauge interest in a Super Mario Maker 2 versus tournament. It has also been announced by Lakituthequick (Talk Page · Forum Profile) that Anniversary Scavenger is returning after being absent last year.
Killing Game has been announced to be hosted by GBAToad (Talk Page · Forum Profile) and The Pyro Guy (Talk Page · Forum Profile), themed around Neo Bowser City and with new stock mechanics, as well as nerving team-ups after feedback from previous editions. It was considered to make some sort of Killing Game/Mafia hybrid, but this has been abandoned.
There has also been interest in hosting Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, time trials in Mario Kart and F-Zero GX, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe versus/battle, and a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild photo search.
Awards
In this part of Anniversary Announcements, I will list all awards that have been discussed, and changes made to them. This includes existing awards, completely new ones and removals, and the additions, removals and changes within each award.
From Super Mario Maker 2, it has been considered to add levels to the Mario and Fail awards of 2D level, but no courses have been found to be interesting by the committee, positive nor negative.
In order to represent the recent release of Luigi's Mansion 3, boss ghosts from the series have been considered for M27 Favorite Boss Battle, but have instead been covered in a new award based on A25 Favorite Portrait Ghost from 2014. Which existing award will be replaced by this is yet to be considered. In addition, it was considered to add areas from this and sports series to F4 Worst RPG Area, modifying its reach to be more inclusive, as well as replacing F4, but these ideas did not gain traction.
Refer to this document for a full list of nominees.
Thanks for reading another edition of Anniversary Announcements! I hope to see you around, next month!
All information above was correct as of 13 May 2020.
