- Six years and olderMario Kart World is an upcoming game in the Mario Kart series set to be released alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch title worldwide on June 5, 2025. First teased during the system's "first-look" trailer on January 16, 2025, the game was properly revealed in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation on April 2, 2025. It is the sixteenth entry in the Mario Kart series, the twelfth to be released by Nintendo, the first game announced for the Switch 2, and the first new Mario Kart title since Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, released almost five years prior. It is also the first Super Mario game overall to be released for the Switch 2 and the first Mario Kart game to feature Kevin Afghani's voicework.
Races now consist of 24 racers, doubling from the previous 12. Players receive points in racing as before, with some positions receiving the same number of points.[11] Bikes and All-Terrain Vehicles return following their absence in Mario Kart Tour. Some karts in this game utilize unique wheel designs, with some lacking wheels entirely in favor of treads. Kart customization as seen in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart 8 does not return, and gliders introduced in Mario Kart 7 are also absent. Instead, karts can now extend wings, which function the same as gliders. Karts can also now drive along the top of water rather than beneath it, with both new mechanics creating a comparable vehicle system to Diddy Kong Racing. In addition, two new in-game modes were added: Knockout Tour and Free Roam. Knockout Tour is an all-out battle mode where players race over consecutive tracks and are eliminated on a specific lap if not met after the required amount of racers, while Free Roam is an open-world adventure mode where one or multiple players can freely explore any track both on- and off-road.[1] Classic courses return, but unlike in past games, many have received more extensive overhauls in terms of layout (including some of the Super Mario Kart tracks being stitched together) or theming (for instance, DK Pass now has a skiing theme).
The art style of the game's characters appears to have changed significantly to resemble 2D illustrations drawn by Shigehisa Nakaue, much like the in-game art style of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Additionally, characters who would automatically wear racing suits on bikes such as Princess Peach are shown wearing their standard clothing due to the additions of costumes, and clothing worn by characters is substantially more detailed than in previous games. The game's roster marked the playable debut of many enemies from across the series, including Cataquack, Coin Coffer, Swoop, and Conkdor, among many more. Altogether, this game features the most brand new playable character additions to the Mario Kart series to date.
The game was covered during the Nintendo Treehouse: Live event on April 3, 2025.[11] A dedicated Nintendo Direct for the game titled the "Mario Kart World Direct" is set to be broadcast on April 17, 2025 at 6:00 a.m. PST / 9:00 a.m. EST / 2:00 p.m. BST.[1]

Racers
Mario Kart World is said to have between 73-84 playable characters, the most of any home console Mario Kart title.
Returning characters
Of the returning characters, Nabbit, Hammer Bro, Chargin' Chuck, and Monty Mole are playable for the first time in a home console Mario Kart game, following their debuts in Mario Kart Tour.
New characters
With the exceptions of Goomba, Piranha Plant, Pianta, Spike, and Dolphin, all currently confirmed newcomers also make their overall playable debut in any game, and all of them except Coin Coffer, Spike, and Conkdor appeared as background characters or obstacles in previous Mario Kart games.
Character costumes
Some characters now have costumes that they can wear, similar to Mario Kart Tour, with some costumes from that game making a return. Certain costumes can be obtained mid-race after eating various food items, though it currently unknown if they have any differences gameplay-wise.

Courses
So far, Mario Kart World is known to have 29 courses, sixteen of which are courses are new and thirteen are returning from previous entries. New to the series are Intermissions, which are long, open trails filled with various hazards that connect courses to each other across a large, open world, which is explorable in Free Roam mode.[1]
Classic courses in this game (marked with their origin game's prefix below) have been significantly revamped, bearing even less resemblance to the original courses than as they appeared in previous games. Unlike previous games since Mario Kart DS, the game's cups are no longer separated between new courses and classic courses, with the game's known seven cups instead housing a varying amount of both types of courses.[1] Among the known classic courses includes one course each from Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart Tour, two courses each from Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart 7, and three courses from Mario Kart DS, along with a course that combines three courses from Super Mario Kart into one track. Additionally, classic courses no longer have a prefix attached to the beginning of their names.
This is also the first Mario Kart game to feature two different tracks with the exact same name and location, that being Crown City, which appears in both the Mushroom Cup and Shell Cup (in contrast to the Wuhu Island tracks in Mario Kart 7 or the city tracks in Mario Kart Tour, which take place on the same map, but have different names to distinguish them).
Grand Prix
The format of the Grand Prix has been changed significantly from previous games. Now, only the first race of a cup follows the traditional three lap format. The last three races follow a sectioned format instead, with the first two sections of the race taking place across Intermissions that transition from the previous course to the next, while the final section consists of one lap of that course.[11]
Three lap races are not entirely absent from the game, however, but it is unknown how they are implemented.[14] One mode allows players to configure "Intermissions".[15]

- A castle found on a beach resembling Mont-Saint-Michel. Its layout resembles Peach Beach[1] and signs in it read "Peach Resort".
- Dino Dino Jungle (GCN)- Redesigned to revolve around a laboratory named "Dino Dino Laboratory", with more dinosaurs directly on the course. Dinosaurs returning from the original also feature new designs.[1][22]

SNES Ghost Valley 1, SNES Ghost Valley 2 and SNES Ghost Valley 3 can be seen near the cinema-themed course, SNES Choco Island 2 near a new course in a large field of mud, and SNES Vanilla Lake 1, near an entrance to Sky-High Sundae.[1]
Knockout Tour
Knockout Tour consists of rallies rather than cups, with each of the eight rallies having 6 races within. The first five take place on the Intermissions between the courses, while the final race consists of a lap around the final course.[23]

Vehicles

- New Super Mario Bros. U: The illustration of a Bomber Bill on the world map icon of DS Airship Fortress is based on its artwork from this game.[2]
- Super Mario 3D World: The promotional renders for various Toads are based on Toad's key artwork from this game.
- Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Several sponsors return from this game. Course select icons generally feature prominent track elements superimposed over images of the courses they belong to, like in this game. Trick-able, surfboard-bearing vehicles return. Karts can illuminate the road ahead of them using headlamps, like in this game. Several Knockout Tour Rally icons are based on cup icons from the Booster Course Pass.[24][1]
- Super Mario Odyssey: A picture mode similar to this game's Snapshot Mode appears. Several of Mario's and Peach's costumes originate from this game or are based on their designs from this game. One of the Knockout Tour Rallies has an icon featuring the Life-Up Heart.[1]
- Dr. Mario World: Baby Rosalina's pacifier color is cyan instead of yellow, like Dr. Baby Rosalina's.[1]
- Mario Kart Tour: Various costumes return from this game. The Hammer, Coin Box, and Ice Flower return as items. Items are generally held behind the player, like in this game.[1] Sky-High Sundae returns as a course. Pickup trucks with Piranha Plants return.
