Crumble Blocks[1] are blocks that appear in the Donkey Kong and Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. They are made of small, loosely packed pale yellow-brown rocks. A Crumble Block falls apart shortly after a Mini or an enemy walks over it. A Thwomp can also destroy Crumble Blocks by falling onto them. In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, a single row of Crumble Blocks will stop a Thwomp's descent and cause it to rise back up.

Similar blocks known as rocks appear in Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars; however, unlike Crumble Blocks, rocks do not crumble if a Mini walks over them, and can only be destroyed by Hammers, a Thwomp, or a Mini fired from a Cannon or a Cannon Kong.

History

Donkey Kong (Game Boy)

Sand block (compressed)

Crumble Blocks first appear in Donkey Kong for the Game Boy. They dissolve as soon as Mario walks over them. They do not return afterwards. In Stage 8-2 in Rocky-Valley, walking over Crumble Blocks sets a group of Chikuchiku, which are trapped under the Crumble Blocks, free. Stage 9-7 in the Tower consists almost entirely of Crumble Blocks.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong

Sand blocks in Fire Mountain from Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
Sand blocks in Mystic Forest from Mario vs. Donkey Kong.
Sand blocks in Fire Mountain Plus from Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Crumble Blocks first appear in Donkey Kong Jungle, where they act essentially the same as in Donkey Kong for the Game Boy, except they collapse slightly faster. They also appear in Fire Mountain, Mystic Forest, and Fire Mountain Plus, and have different appearances depending on the world in which they are found.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, they are introduced in Room 2-7 of Tropical Island. In the Construction Zone, they can be used in the Tropical Island construction kit, Special Kit 1, Special Kit 2, and Special Kit 3.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!

In Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!, Crumble Blocks are introduced in Area 3-2 of Teatime Twirl. They behave identically to their previous appearance; however, in this game, they can also be destroyed if a Mini slides into them from a steep slope, or if a Mini touches them after it is fired from a Cannon. Thwomps can also destroy Crumble Blocks; however, unlike in Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis, a Thwomp will break any Crumble Blocks in its path without stopping until it hits solid ground.
