Deku Babas are carnivorous plant enemies from The Legend of Zelda series which have first appeared in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Deku Babas have made a few Mario-related appearances, their first being a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and later a guest appearance in Mario Kart 8's The Legend of Zelda x Mario Kart 8 downloadable pack and the base game for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Deku Babas are a venus flytrap-like species, like Piranha Plants, although Shigeru Miyamoto has once mentioned that Deku Babas were designed by crossing a dog with the Super Mario 64 enemy, Clam.[1]
In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a few Deku Babas are featured as an obstacle in a section of Hyrule Circuit, right after exiting Hyrule Castle. Deku Babas are designed after their appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and they behave the same as Piranha Plants do in Template:Classic-link. If a racer drives near a Deku Baba, it lunges at them, attempting to bite them. If the racer is hit, they get knocked over and are therefore slowed temporarily.
