Template:Item-infobox Moon Coins are like Star Coins, but they have 3-Up Moons imprinted on them. They appear only in World Star of New Super Mario Bros. 2. Despite playing a similar role, they cannot be used in the way Star Coins can, meaning that they cannot be used to remove Star Coin Signs; collecting Moon Coins is required only to obtain a star icon on the player's profile, although collecting them all will permanently open every Toad House.
Moon Coins also appear in Mario Golf: World Tour, where they can be obtained by the player by accomplishing challenges that are harder than their Star Coin versions. In Moon Coin challenges, the coins and rings are placed in trickier positions, the characters to challenge in match plays have leveled up, the wind is stronger, and back tees are used.
