The Koopa Troop (Japanese クッパ軍団 Kuppa gundan "Bowser Corps"), named as such in Super Mario RPG; also known as the Turtle Tribe (in the Super Mario Bros. instruction booklet, as well as the data for Mario in Super Smash Bros.), Koopa Pack (in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!), Bowser Baddies (in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga), the Koopa clan (in the Paper Mario series) or simply the Koopa is a militaristic dictatorship led by Bowser, King of the Koopa. The Koopa Troop wishes to take over the peaceful Mushroom Kingdom, and ultimately, the entire world and the entire Mushroom Universe. The Koopa Troop has taken over the Mushroom Kingdom multiple times and has even attempted to take over the Mushroom World, Dinosaur Land, and the Mushroom Universe. According to Kammy Koopa in Paper Mario, the motive for the clan is to have revenge against all who have treated Koopa Troopas poorly. However, some of their goals are based entirely on Bowser's own interests.
The Koopa Troop is unstoppable. Bowser has an unlimited supply of soldiers; the Koopa Troop also has an army (with tanks), a maritime navy (with battleships), an air force (with airships), and a space fleet with some ships dreadnought, battlerock and a UFO with lasers as seen in Super Mario Galaxy(just to name a few). Despite having such a huge military, the Koopa Troop is continuously defeated by the Mario Brothers, the heroes of the Mushroom Universe, as well as those who assist the Mario Bros. on their missions to protect the Mushroom Kingdom (such as Toads)
The main force of the Koopa Troop differs from game to game. Koopa Troopas are quite obviously the most intelligent of their widely-used members and Magikoopas, Hammer Bros. and Koopatrols are among their elites. Also, strangely, Yoshi Topsy-Turvy seems to suggest that Fly Guys, who were constantly seen during Bowser's cut scene-illustrated operations, were the Koopa Troop's main soldiers. The Yoshi series seems to suggest that back while Bowser was a baby, the troop's main force mainly consisted of Shy Guys.
In addition, the Koopa Troop also has an elite seven-member youth task force known as the Koopalings, which also held some command over the forces. In addition, they report directly to Bowser, and are fanatically loyal to him. Likewise, prior to Bowser Jr.'s birth, the Koopalings' leader, Ludwig von Koopa, was originally Bowser's second-in-command, hinting that Ludwig also had a large degree of control of the Koopa Troop forces.
During the events of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Mario eventually joined the Koopa Troop. When Bowser joined Mario's Party at Booster Tower, he made Mario, Mallow and Geno honorary members. However, the scene could also be interpreted as Bowser joining Mario, with Bowser's wording of allowing Mario and friends to join the Koopa Troop being a simple way to keep his own pride and avoid joining his arch nemesis (this is actually implied in Super Mario RPG, which states "or so they're pretending" after it announces that Mario and friends joined the Koopa Troop). In addition, throughout the game, Bowser's forces were gradually deserting him as they attempt to fight off Smithy's army, presumably due to lack of morale from the overwhelming odds.
The Koopa Kingdom is said to consist of the lands where Bowser and his minions reside, although this is seldom visited in the games. The locations speculated to be parts of the Koopa Kingdom in the games are the World 8 of Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros., as well as World 6 of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and World 5 of Yoshi's Island DS. There are also the Bowser Baddies, which are only seen assisting Bowser with his custom airship, the Koopa Cruiser.
In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, the Koopa Troop is shown to be split into different divisions (the Goomba corps, the Shy Guy corps, the Koopa unit, the Bob-omb squad and the Magikoopa corps), as evidenced when Fawful shows Bowser his captured soldiers. As Bowser rescues his soldiers, he is able to use them as attacks, for example, using a squadron of Shy Guys to sling Bowser forward to the enemy.
In The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, the creatures under the command of King Koopa were often referred to by the Koopa Pack and on one occasion, Koopa Troopers and Team Koopa; though in later episodes of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, the name Koopa Pack seemed to be used interchangeably between generic minions of King Koopa and a subsidiary group consisting of King Koopa, Mouser, Tryclyde, and a single, unnamed Koopa Troopa. Additionally, the battle cry of the Koopa Pack, which was often yelled by King Koopa, was "Koopa Pack, attack!".
Koopa Troop military heirarchy/code
The Koopa Troop had a strict code against having facial hair, as evidenced by Bowser's reaction to one of his supposed troops possessing facial hair in Super Paper Mario before discovering that it was actually the Mario Bros.
In terms of hierarchy, if Bowser is killed or otherwise incapacitated, his son, Bowser Jr., would assume command over the kingdom, and by extension, become the military's commander in chief. Ludwig von Koopa, the leader of the Koopalings, was originally Bowser's second in command until Bowser Jr. was born, hinting that if a bloodline heir did not exist, a top general would assume command of the military.
