“Mario, I know all about your adventures around the world. You've been everywhere! And you always get the best of the bad guys. Everytime! You're the coolest! I wanna be just like you!”
Goombario, Paper Mario

Template:Character-infobox Goombario is the first of Mario's party members. He made his first appearance in Paper Mario. His speciality is providing Mario with information about the various locations and enemies in the game. In the sequel this task is carried on by Goombella. Goombario's name also appears in the Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour and Mario Golf: Advance Tour scorechart. In Super Paper Mario he appears as a Catch Card found on the twentieth floor of the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials.

History

Paper Mario

When Mario falls into Goomba Village at the start of Paper Mario, Goombario and his family (Goombaria, Goompa, Gooma, Goomama and Goompapa) finds him and then he faces Jr. Troopa and they let him rest in the Toad House. When Mario falls off the balcony in Goompa's house, Goompa and Mario find a Hammer and smash through a yellow block to get back to Goomba Village. Kammy Koopa attacks the village and Mario tells them about his quest. Goompa suggests that Goombario join Mario on his adventure, and he accepts. In the field, Goombario can use his tattle to find out where Mario is and tell him about the people they meet. Goombario is named after Mario according to Goompapa.

He will occasionally break the fourth wall and his tattles seem to indicate a friendly rivalry with Kooper. He also stated he doesn't like eating fish, and would like an Albino Dino for a pet.

Trivia

Goombario, as he would have appeared in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario respectively.
  • Many times in the game, namely Cloudy Climb, Bowser's Castle, and Raphael the Raven's Tree, Goombario mentions his fear of heights.
  • Goompapa says that Goombario is named after Mario. And just as "Goombario" is a combination of "Goomba" and "Mario", his Japanese name, "Kurio", is also a portmanteau of "Kuribo" (Goomba in Japanese) and "Mario".
  • Judging by Goombario's tattles of them, he is apparently infatuated with Misstar, Vanna T., Merlee, Merluvlee, and Chanterelle.
  • Goombario is a bit envious of Kooper, probably because he "stole" Mario's attention, after all, he is the first team member after Goombario. The player can notice this by using the Tattle ability on Lee at the Toad Town Dojo, or on an ordinary Duplighost, when they turn into Kooper's clones.
  • Goombario's personality in the French version of Paper Mario is completely different from his personality in other versions. He talks in a very rude way, and even uses a couple of swear words during the game. As such, it makes him a bit similar to Goombella.
  • In Super Paper Mario, Goombario was in some photos along with the other Party Members in the Paper Mario History at Mario's House.
  • Goombario is the only partner in the game that has two attacks that don't require any FP.
